I bought this elsewhere without really doing my due diligence, but I have used Asus products for the past 20 years, I know they are a reliable name, for the most part. I bought it for email, web browsing, writing, and photo editing. I didn't realize when I bought it that it was the 64-bit version of Windows 8, so I was pleasantly surprised by that. I've had it for a couple of days, and I'm suffering absolutely zero buyer's remorse.

Unlike a lot of laptops I've had in the past (Dell, for instance), it didn't come loaded up with a lot of the manufacturer's applications, and 3rd party junk that I would have to uninstall just to get reasonable performance. It took me no time at all to get it squared away to suit my personal tastes, and I experienced no issues at all.

There's a trend lately to sell laptops with no CD/DVD drive, but I like to physically own copies of my software when possible, so it was nice to discover this laptop had one (like I said, I knew NOTHING about this thing when I bought it, other than the spec sheet and the few minutes I spent with the display unit).

I've had laptops in the past that had no number pad. I'm old school, I like having my NumPad, so I was once again pleased to find that it had that covered, too.

The keyboard doesn't feel too bad. A little 'chicklet'-y, if you know what I mean. The keys aren't as responsive as a 'normal' keyboard, sometimes I find that letters are missing that I clearly remember pressing. I think if I was going to do any serious writing, I'd hook up a regular keyboard to the USB port.

The screen is great, super picture, no complaints. The sound is about what you'd expect from a laptop with small speakers, but it's fine for what it's being used for.

This computer is absolutely wonderful the speed of the Intel Core i3 is much much more then the speed I ever expected.
From the moment I opened the well made and packaged box I fell in love with the computer the moment I turned it on. Literally blinding speed well made, easy to operate if you enjoy just turning on your computer and watching it update. Once it's done just try to keep up with it.

QUICK SUMMARY: Nicely-featured, low-end laptop will suit many user needs in a very affordable price-point. Several quibbles keep me from loving it, though.

BACKGROUND: I bought this laptop for my wife, who uses it for email, Netflix (DVD and streaming), creating documents, and surfing the web. She plays no games and uses few other programs besides the Microsoft Office suite. It replaces a 10-year-old Dell laptop running Windows 7 Professional on 1GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Her old laptop was choking on lack of RAM.

OUT OF BOX EXPERIENCE: This Asus had relatively little bloatware, but there are a few Asus utilities and Asus-selected apps from the Microsoft Store preloaded. I was surprised and irritated that Asus included Windows 8, not Windows 8.1, which meant I spent HOURS downloading security patches and doing the Windows 8.1 upgrade followed by more security patching. But the *worst* decision Asus made was pre-loading McAfee anti-virus software tools. The McAfee scanner gobbled up 500MB of RAM memory on a machine that only had 4GB to start with! This, without me asking McAfee to do anything on my behalf. My experience with McAfee and Symantec's Norton anti-virus products is dismal and it's impossible to fully remove their fingerprints from a system (running their uninstaller program notwithstanding).

FOR TECHIE FOLKS ONLY: I also encountered an error when I tried using my Windows Home Server 2011 to backup this Asus laptop. The problem is that this Asus uses GUID Partition Table (GPT) for disk partitioning rather than Master Boot Record (MBR). There is a hotfix for WHS 2011 for this, but that has it's own issues, so I've opted to use Windows 8's new backup/restore methods, like using File History.

I bought this as a xmas present for my 17yr old but i will also be using it for school. I like how slim the computer is. i own a Toshiba(my kids broke it) that i bought about 5yrs ago for about 650 & this runs just as good. i had to get use to windows 8 but its not as hard as i thought it would be i dont really like it but i can work with it. I really dont like the tiles its good for mobile(didnt like it their either but had its uses) but not on my computer. touch pad is sensitive but i knew that from reading reviews but i still couldnt avoid it closing or jumping my screen around even though i tried. it is fast but i found it slow/stalling because a shockwave script stopped. my toshiba had this same problem didnt think i would have the same issue with a new computer. the only things i dont like are 1. Games arent pre installed(its easy to install them) i like the games that use to come pre installed 2. Ugh restarting, logging out to switch users takes longer then it needs to. 3. Not being able to disable the login with password for individual accounts. 4. Updating took awhile. I had to force it to update(use the control panel) because it didnt find the updates the 1st time i searched(using the update under settings). It took a while to download & install(120 updates), then i had to update to win 8.1 which took just as long because it sets up the computer all over again, so you turn it on it sets up, you update, restart, then update to win 8.1, restart, then it sets up the computer a 2nd time(which takes longer then the 1st time), very time consuming(good thing you can use the conputer while its downloading & installing). overall i would buy again but i would jump at any new computer running Windows 7 & has ms word free. i bought this computer because i couldnt find a toshiba that i would/could spend money on & two having intel i3 at this price got asus & the seller a sale. my daughter is happy so i am happy
