Like a lot of people, I sometimes use my laptop on business travel or when I'm away from home. Besides the lack of AC outlets, my biggest gripe are shoulder surfers. It used to be just busybodies, but now you have to worry about identity theft or industrial espionage.

The Belkin TrueClear Privacy Screen Protector does a good job ensuring that prying eyes to either side of you won't be able to see the contents of your screen. The screen fits my Lenovo Flex 2-15 perfectly and there's a cutout at the top for the built-in webcam. The screen comes with a storage sleeve for when you're home, a set of adhesive pads and a cleaning cloth. The screen also has a glossy and matte side for those who prefer one or the other.

Installation was easy and didn't impair my ability to use the touch screen on my laptop. I did notice a few fingerprints, but they were easily removed by the cleaning cloth. The screen is slightly dimmer when the screen is installed, but it doesn't make the screen hard to see. I have a similar screen for my iPad and the only issues I've had with it are bits of dust and cruft between the screen and the laptop. I expect this will have the same eventually, but my laptop is less subject to manhandling than the iPad. The view from above or below the screen is not impaired so you'll need to keep that in mind.

Overall, I have a positive opinion of the screen, but those who need to see your screen will have to literally look over your shoulder to see the screen

Touch Screen Functionality Works. Micro Suction Cups Difficult To Reapply

The Belkin TrueClear is one of the few privacy guards available for touch screen laptops.

As with all adhesive related installations, it is important to have a clean environment and surfaces. I use the iKlear iK-26K Complete Cleaning Kit to ensure that I have clean non-static surfaces. Installation is simple - stick a micro-suction tabs to each corner of the privacy guard. Remove the protective coating and attach to a "clean" laptop bezel. Cannot emphasize how important it is to have a clean, grease free surface. These micro-suction tabs are tacky tabs and not "suction" tabs.

I have it installed on my Dell XPS machine and there is no lag in touch response. The privacy guard does require your brightness to be slightly higher which marginally impacts my battery life. The privacy aspect works very well. You have to be directly in front of the screen as once you are 30 degrees or more off the center you cannot see anything on the screen.

The issues I found were that the privacy guard is heavier than most I have used. It may not sound too heavy at 2 ounces, but add in the micro-suction tabs and it only compounds the issue. I wish Belkin used the old 3M attaching concept where you permanently attach the tabs to your laptop screen and slide the privacy guard in and out. The other issue is that the micro-suction surfaces get clogged with dust and though you can clean them with sticky tape, they do not seem to retain their initial tackiness.

If you are the kind of user than installs and forgets it, it'll work for you, but if you are the user that needs to remove it daily (like me!) it will not work for you.Read more ›

Privacy screen guards for one's laptops and notebooks are a necessity for a variety of reasons that go beyond just the immediate need to prevent prying eyes from seeing one's business. But the problem is that screen guards have varying degrees of effectiveness and prices. This Belkin TrueClear Privacy Screen Protector is a bit on the pricey side but this reviewer found it to be worth it. The included installation guide is lacking in details as others have noted but it is not exactly rocket science so application is simply a matter of some common sense techniques. Once my laptop screen was properly cleaned with a microfiber cloth, I carefully used a canned air duster to blow off any remaining dust or lint. This is the most tedious part as one has to make sure that the surface is as emasculate as possible before applying the screen protector since most screen protectors are better left alone once applied to the screen. It was also nice to see that the screen protector had a matte finish on one side and a glossy finish on the other. Personally, I prefer the matte look since it does not reflect bright lights as easily. The actual application process took just as much patience as I slowly made sure that there it was lined up properly and that any air bubbles were taken care of immediately. Once applied, I noticed only the slightest difference in the screen colors. The touch responsiveness did not seem to be impacted in any way and finger prints and smudges were also not a major issue. Those who prefer the glossy side facing out might have problems with residual finger prints, though. Looking at it from a distance, my screen looked practically black but perfectly clear once I was sitting at a normal distance. That is exactly what one expects from an effective privacy screen protector. Overall, I was rather pleased with the Belkin TrueClear Screen Protector and would easily recommend it to others.

When the Belkin TrueClear Screen Protector arrived I had to laugh. The instructions for installing the screen protector were a series of pictures that may have made sense to the people in China, but looked like nonsense to me. No matter. These pictures were completely unneccessary. I took the green cleaning cloth that comes in the box and carefully removed any fingerprints, dirt, and smudges from my Dell Notebook. Now my screen was perfectly clean. I removed the plastic that protects the screen protector and placed it with the tab fitting into the lower left hand corner of the notebook screen. The screen protector covered about 95% of my Dell screen which was more than enough. I then closed and then opened the notebook -- the protector stayed perfectly in place. Then I took off the protector and looked at the images on the notebook screen, put the protector back on and tried to determine if there was a noticeable difference; I could not detect one.

For those people who want to keep their notebook screen clean, this Belkin product should do the job for you. One star removed for the laughable pictorial instructions.
