This DOES work with windows 8.1. I don't know why other people say it doesn't work with Win 8.1 -- maybe because it doesn't show up as a drive until a disk is inserted?

Great little external drive. Feels solid, good quality.

I've used this to install software and rip audio CDs and it works like a charm

No problems with this CD drive. It does require two USB connections to operate, and the cords aren't that long, so be aware of that. I've used this to install software and rip audio CDs and it works like a charm...great for my new Dell PC running Windows 8, which came sans CD drive. The only real bad thing about this CD drive is that it makes a lot of noise. Might be irritating if you plan to play CDs without ripping them. On the whole though, I feel good about having bought this drive.

It works ok, unfortunately I have to plug and unplug it to eject a cd after uploading to my pc. It goes to sleep and won't eject so I have to play with it a little.

for a merger 13 dollers, this is probable the best value external did drive out there. Though slow at times, that is to be expected from USB 2.0. Be sure that when you buy this that you have 2 available USB ports, because this drive needs a connection for power and data.
