If I could give this backpack a 4.5, that's what I would do. I had the previous version of this backpack, and I can tell anyone that has had that one, that this one is basically the same thing, but without the silly flaps that were on the previous version. That alone will be enough for the people that bought the previous verison.

It has a nice, very large laptop sleeve that is really just that, a laptop sleeve with a nice amount of padding around it. Roomy enough for my oversized 17 inch laptop and a first generation kindle in the additional tablet sleeve inside of it.

Next down from that is a small compartment that I like to keep pencils and pens in, though it could be a nice glasses compartment.

Next there is a big main compartment that can hold quite a bit. A bunch of books at the very least. Both that and the next down, smaller compartment have mesh bag type things on the walls that you can zipper closed. I like to keep my calculator in one of them. On the inner wall of the smaller compartment there are a bunch of small sleeves that I dont use, but I could see being useful.

The outer vertical zipper is a surprisingly useful compartment. Its shallow to the point where you can't really keep much in it, but I like to use it for chargers or charging cords and whatnot. Things I want quick access to.

There are two side pockets that can probably both fit a water bottle in each. They generally go unused for me, but they have been useful when the rest of the backpack is full.

The last thing is a somewhat concealed zipper compartment behind the lower back padding on inside wall that would be on your back. That is small and would only really fit a wallet or something like that.

I'll admit it...I'm a bag snob, constantly on the search for the "perfect" bag for different applications. I think I've found "The One" for commuting back and forth from work with my personal belongings and work electronics/files.

This backpack has very intelligent zipped compartments, with additional smart organizers within each. There's space in the large padded compartment closest to my back (if I were wearing it) for a large laptop and a tablet, plus files or a book if you wanted to store it there. The next large zippered section has a "holder" for files, plus a large zipped mesh section for smaller flat items, and can easily accommodate any amount of materials I'd need to bring home for working over the weekend. The next large zippered pocket is perfect for personal items, like my wallet, cosmetic bag, umbrella, keys, emergency phone charger, etc., plus it has a organization section of small pockets that are perfect for holding pens, Post-Its, business cards, etc. There's also a small soft fabric zippered compartment on the top of the bag for easy access to a phone or iPod. There are a number of "bonus" pockets, including a vertical 12" zip pocket on the front of the bag, small side zippered pockets for train tickets, etc., and a hidden zippered pocket behind the padding that protects your back when you're wearing the pack.

All this in a backpack that's light, has a relatively slim profile (important when one is trying to navigate getting off the train without inadvertently decking anyone), and seems durable and well-made in terms of the fabric, stitching, and padding.

As an aside, this Case Logic backpack is replacing a Brenthaven Pacific backpack that at the time I purchased it cost me $80, and that after only one year, looks ratty and threadbare.

I would highly recommend this Case Logic backpack to anyone looking for a great blend of function, quality, weight, and cost.

The build quality on this bag, so far, is very good, had it about a month. Lots of pockets to put stuff, plenty of room for whatever I need to bring with me, and it fits my MSi GS70 which is a very large 17" laptop.

All in all, it is serving me well, and fits everything I need, as long as the bag holds together I'll be good with this for a long time. Highly recommended for large laptops.

Have moved to this backpack from a computer brief case. It is lighter weight and much more functional. I do considerable international travel and just returned from the first trip with this backpack. It held everything I needed for carry-on on the plane; laptop, tablet with travel keyboard, cables, two books, work related documents, travel documents, travel umbrella and misc other items. Plenty of space. And the case fits nicely in the overhead bin of one of those loathsome (sardine can) Embraer 145 regional jets that United flies.

The pocket in the lumbar pad is very handy for passport and boarding passes. The top compartment for glasses is useful for so many other things you need to keep handy besides glasses. And their system for keeping the shoulder straps rolled up and contained so that they are not dangling every where and getting in the way is great.

Only dislike is that because the material is so soft there are times that the bag collapses on itself slightly which makes it difficult to operate the zippers occasionally. On the same note the softness of it makes it easy to load into bins and under seats on planes.
