Excellent construction quality ... not great design

The quality of this backpack is excellent. The material is heavyweight with a very nice finish -- it's not the usual ballistic or cordura nylon, but rather a heavyweight fabric that almost looks like a grey flannel suit. The stitching is even all around, and the zippers are high quality with oversize pulls. The shoulder straps are wider than many packs of this type, with excellent padding. The case has an insanely generous 25 year quality guarantee, which speaks to Case Logic's confidence in the quality. It also has nice details, like velcro loops that wrap up excess webbing from the shoulder adjustment straps (this is very handy if you tend to hang the backpack from the hook on a rolling suitcase -- otherwise the straps tend to trail out and drag on the ground behind the pack).

On the downside, the design -- and therefore usability -- of the case is not so great. The straps are anchored in front of the laptop compartment, so you have to flip them around the front of the case to get at the laptop. Not a big deal (and even a benefit if you're afraid someone will try to steal your laptop while the case is on your back), but it makes the laptop compartment more of a pain to use. The main compartment has a "suitcase style" opening so that it zips all the way open and folds out flat. That might be useful if you're using the backpack as a suitcase, but it isn't useful when carrying folders and notebooks. The main compartment has a laptop sleeve stitched to the back wall, but given the position of the sleeve and the position of the main compartment zipper, it's more of a struggle than it need be to get a tablet in an out when the case is fully loaded.Read more ›

A Solid Backpack

This is a great backpack. I'm a fan of Case Logic camera bags, so this didn't come as a huge surprise. Much like the camera bags it's sturdy and full of useful compartments, in addition to being comfortable to wear. Some of the compartments seem a bit random--do I really need a lower-back pocket?--but I've yet to find this to be an inconvenience. I was impressed when it held up in an unexpected downpour; I wouldn't leave it out in the rain for terribly long, but books and laptops will definitely survive a 10-block sprint through the rain.

Wonderful Backpack

I bought this pack to use as a carry-on bag for air and cruise travel. I was amazed at how much I could fit into this backpack and still be well under the size/weight limit for overhead storage compartments. I was easily able to pack 2 full sets of clothing and a windbreaker jacket in the larger compartment with ease and the full opening access was absolutely wonderful. The rear pocket easily fit all my many travel documents as well as my iPad without adding unwanted bulk. The front pocket is also very roomy and functional. I managed to fit 2 cameras (in cases), 3 chargers, 3 pairs of sunglasses, 1qt ziplock bag with airline allowed essentials and also 5 (yes 5) ball caps. The side pockets easily held my phone and another point-n-shoot camera or water bottle. With all these items, the bag was still not too heavy and the wide padded straps made it very comfortable to carry even for my bad 57 yr old back. I am so glad I purchased this quality made bag that I know will give me years of good heavy use.

Carry it All Plus More

Needed something to carry lots of different things on our upcoming vacation. I have backpacks that are well made, but they are just backpacks of yesteryear.

This is a rockin', up-to-date backpack. There is a dedicated compartment for my laptop, plus another dedicated sleeve for my wife's Kindle. I also needed a place for my Canon EOS 40D. I didn't want to carry my camera bag too. Now I don't have to as it all fits here. There are places for magazines, paperbacks, pencils and pens, plus water bottles. The backpack has a suitcase style opening on the main compartment that makes it easy to pack and get to things. The shoulder straps are strong and comfortable. Top and bottom grab handles are nice for movement and storage in overhead bins on planes. To keep things safe, there is a secure hidden pocket on the lumbar panel where I could put small valuables, if I needed to.

This definitely fits the bill for me.

Solid, sturdy, comfy

Solid, sturdy, comfy.

Way smaller than it looks in the pictures, but somehow I've been able to fit everything I need inside this backpack.

I own a Lenovo Y40 (14" screen size) which is extremely slim, and it's the exact size, a millimeter more and I would have had to return this. Also, I'm very thankful for the back pocket which makes me feel more secure about my laptop's safety.

I feel like this backpack needs some time to "break in" because sometimes it can feel like extremely solid even when there's not much on the inside.

Also, this backpack just won't stand straight, you NEED to let it rest against something.

The compartments are smartly located and I've had no problem adapting to the rotating straps.

If you are unsure if this bag will fit your laptop, better go with the 15" version.
