Acer C720 (4 gb RAM) vs the Asus C200 (11.6 inch)

As an owner of a Acer C720 (the 4GB RAM version) that I have used nearly each day since it was released to the public, I love Chromebooks and the ChromeOS environment. Here's some info for those who may be contemplating between the best-selling Acer C720 and the newly released Asus C200:

Performance:
- The Acer wins hands down. I have almost never experienced lagging, despite having dozens of tabs open while also streaming music/videos. Individual webpages definitely take slightly longer to load on the Asus. Furthermore, typed text will occasionally lag ever so slightly on the Asus. The Asus also appears to lag every once in a while if you have too many active tabs/windows open. The Asus is still fun to use (owning much to its superior build quality) but power users beware!

Screen:
- I greatly prefer the screen on the Asus, even though I generally opt for matte screens. Things show up much sharper on the Asus and the screen appears to be of a higher overall quality. Glare on the Asus is not as bad as other glossy laptops that I've previously used, and viewing angles aren't great for either laptop. I've also used a HP 14 Chromebook and would consider both the Acer and Asus screens to be superior.

Build Quality:
- The Acer feels downright cheap compared to the Asus. The Asus feels sturdier and neither the screen nor the body flexes under pressure. I also love the hinged design of the Asus screen and the overall look & feel.

Keyboard:
- I've been generally pleased with the keyboard on the Acer, enough to make it my primary laptop. However, I LOVE the Asus keyboard, which feels closer to $600+ Asus models than typical budget laptop fare.Read more ›

Cannot beat it for the price

Just received this chromebook, and have been using it nonstop.

Like any other chromebook it boots up and is ready to go in no time. Literally connect to your wifi and enter your google account and you are good to go.

The chromebook itself is incredibly light. It is also silent while running. It doesn't have a fan due to the new Intel processor and you literally can not hear a thing when it is running. The screen is sharp and text looks good. It isnt a full HD display but for the money it is definitely decent. The keyboard is surprisingly huge for the size of this laptop. I don't feel that i need to adjust my fingers any differently than on a 15 inch laptop. Considering how small this chromebook is its great to see the size of the keyboard and the trackpad for that matter. The trackpad is a monster for this size and extremely responsive and works great with multi finger gestures.

It is very quick as well. Only when having numerous tabs, 12 or more, and hangout chats open did I notice a stuttering with the computer. While i have been using i have consistently had about 5 tabs open with a couple of chats and some music playing and haven't had any problems.

Having only spent a day with it i can't comment too much on battery life, but i have been using it pretty heavily for about 6 hours with brightness turned almost at max and the battery life is around 55% still which is pretty remarkable.

Update 08/05/14

I use this thing almost everyday and it is still running like a champ.

The battery life is still incredible, and I found that charging usually takes under 2 hours. It still starts up in no time and i have no real complaints other than the touchpad can be a little jumpy at times.

Unless anything drastic happens I cannot recommend this chromebook enough. If you were considering this one dont hesitate because it really is that good.

Simply a decent chromebook

Design:
The C200's build quality is superior to other chromebooks in its class, it does not feel anywhere near as cheap when compared to the Acer C720. The chassis feels solid with very little flex, but make no mistake it still feels like a $300 laptop. The black and silver color scheme looks nice, the metallic silver looks good, but the matte black picks up fingerprints/grease and will look like a mess in no time. The keyboard and track pad are best in class, both are spacious and full size. The keys provide good feedback, while the track pad has a smooth easy to use surface with good faux button feedback. The speakers are a step up when compared to the C720, they have a surprisingly decent range and can be clear & loud, BUT they are mounted on the bottom facing down. Unless you have it sitting on a flat hard surface it will sound muffled especially if sitting on your lap. The screen is the typical 1366 x 768 res you will find in pretty much every other Chromebook. It is bright and clear, with good color for a TN panel, BUT vertical viewing angles are bad and it is GLOSSY which means annoying reflections.

Performance:
The Baytrail is just OKAY. There have been times I only had a few tabs open and performance will obviously slow when you have a busy/complex site open and if you try to play 1080P Youtube vids, you will get stuttering/dropped frames. The Baytrail's poor performance is especially evident using Google Maps i.e. scrolling across the map or zooming in/out is not smooth at all. It just doesn't hold up as well as the current gen Haswell Celerons.Read more ›
