Asus is the third highest rated manufacturer of laptops (behind Apple and Lenovo) according to LaptopMag. This is the Asus D550CA-RS31 X-Series model notebook. It's a good laptop for the most part. The screen has a sharp picture and the colors look good, but there are some disappointments. It was fast enough for general use but it's not a gaming machine. The speakers were OK but not excellent. Windows 8 is installed, so plan on spending some time to get the free upgrade to 8.1 and then the 8.1 Update (because Microsoft has announced it will no longer support Windows 8.1 - see the Comment below).

SPECS:
* The CPU is the Intel Core i3 3217U 1.8GHz, which is a 64-bit, dual-core CPU that rates 6.2 out of 10 (10 is highest) on the CPUBoss ratings. With hyperthreading this CPU can run 4 threads, but turboboost is not supported. Core i3 is not as fast as some other laptops with Core i5 or Core i7 but is faster than some other laptops with the Intel Celeron CPUs.
* Intel HD 4000 graphics. PC Magazine said the Intel HD Graphics 4000 will let you play 3D games at low to moderate settings, depending on the game.
* 6GB DDR3 memory, expandable to 8GB.
* 500GB hard drive (5400 rpm) made by HGST, a Western Digital company.
* 15.6" high-definition display with 1366 x 768 resolution.
* Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support.
* HDMI out for connecting to an HDTV or other devices.
* VGA D-sub port for connecting to an external monitor
* 2 USB ports, one is 2.0, one is USB 3.0
* Chicklet style keyboard

Great Computer Once Windows 8 is Fixed - See review for instructions

How to fix this computer and make it run correctly:

For those of you that haven't noticed, this computer was inaccurately listed as including Windows 8.1. The computer comes preloaded with Windows 8 and will have many issues with updates and update install loops if you do not take the following steps. Be aware that if you have already started messing with updates and are not starting from scratch, you may need to begin this process by completing a factory restore to get a clean slate (but not necessarily). From start to finish this process took me 5 or 6 hours on a broadband internet connection. Use this process at your own risk. If you are willing to take the time to do this, the computer is a great machine at a great price.

Step 1. Go to the following link and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Step 2. Manually download and install the Windows Update that is causing the problem. You can find the update at the following link:

Step 3. Repeat Step 1

Step 4. Manually download and install the Windows Update that will allow you to move from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 at the following link:

Step 5. Uninstall the trial version of anti-virus that comes pre-loaded

Step 6. Repeat Step 1

Step 7. Go to the Windows Store and click on the upgrade to Windows 8.1 link

Step 8. Allow several hours for the download and install of Windows 8.1. Be aware that there will be many instances where the computer appears to be frozen mid-process. Be patient – if you re-boot it can ruin the whole process.

Step 9. Install all Windows 8.1 updates via the Windows Update tool.

The computer should now be loaded with Windows 8.1, fully updated, and trouble free.

The user should be aware that the BIOS has been crippled in this Notebook to prevent the user from booting from USB or DVD. Also, the machine was supplied without a Micro$oft COA and Windows 8 product key except the one embedded in the machine from the pre-loaded Windows 8. Also noted, the cursor tends to drift when accessing the left touchpad button requiring one hand to hold the cursor in place while the other hand clicks the touchpad button.

Stardock.Com's Start8 is a valuable tool to return the desktop to the user for some productivity. Start8 makes Windows usable and useful.

I would have given this machine perhaps four stars if ASUS hadn't crippled the BIOS function(s). Also, current methods of pre-loading Windows 8 is done at the expense and detriment of the user/purchaser. Out of warranty hardware failures will significantly hurt the buyer and could result in the loss of access to Windows 8 altogether.

This is a nice laptop for the price, however, the description on Amazon is deceiving, it CLEARLY says that the laptop comes loaded with Windows 8.1, the one I received absolutely did not. When I checked the OS, it was loaded with Windows 8. I realize this is more of a inconvenience than anything. After loading the 96 Windows updates, this took eight hours to complete, I was finally able to upgrade to Windows 8.1. Expect to spend some time setting up this laptop. Although this laptop comes loaded with an icon for Microsoft office, it is just that, an icon that takes you to a page where you can purchase office.
