Compares favorably with models costing twice as much...

...because the quad-core processor, 12GB of RAM and 1TB HDD are not currently the performance specs for similarly priced computers, but for those costing twice as much. Maybe this model is reaching the end of Dell's production life, or perhaps the absence of a touch screen and 5GHZ wireless option has moved it into the "bargain priced" laptop domain, but one thing is for sure: if the absence of a touch screen is something you can live with (and I certainly can): you're not likely to find a more capable machine in this price range.

Good connectivity options (ethernet, integrated 802.11, Bluetooth, HDMI output and USB [2x 3.0 and 2x USB 2]).l

After loading an Office Professional suite, an anti-virus program and the normal set of PC utility programs I use (inclduing a screen capture tool and audio editor, boot time from power off is an astonishing 24 seconds (12 seconds to my user splash screen, and 12 more for the desktop to be ready to use). Shutdown time to full power of is less than 20 seconds.

I don't yet have a consistent sense of battery life, which will vary depending on power management settings (including an "ultra long life" setting that will maximize available charge time) and use. I generally don't have to work with a laptop for extended periods away from AC power, so this is not an important feature for me.

For a mass market laptop, this computer arrived surprisingly free of bloatware/trialware.

Super responsive to productivity tasks, and so far has handled light video processing just fine.

Long term durability is TBD, but for most users, this is going to outpunch others in its weight class.

decent laptop, non-typical usage

Decent laptop, I bought one mainly to use as an auxiliary system to host a few virtual machines on -- I mainly access it via RDP. Since the lid stays closed the majority of the time my cat enjoys sleeping on top of it (added bonus!)

It came with Windows 8. Given I loathe Windows 8, formatting the drive and installing Windows 7 was the first thing I did. Which brings me to this... it took some searching to find drivers that would work with Windows 7. Most you can find via links from the Dell forums -- with one exception, the USB 3.0 drivers -- you need to get from AMD's website - I know that the package named 14-4-win7-win8-win8.1-32-64-sb.exe worked perfectly for me. Its a 'Catalyst' package -- that contains more than just the GPU driver.. I remember it being a bit difficult to find.

An excellent machine for a very modest price!

A very good purchase at a surprisingly modest price!

Here are the great qualities of this computer: a quiet fan, a large and beautiful screen, great speed (the whole Adobe Suite works lightening fast on this computer), an approximate 1 TB hard drive, and 12 GB of RAM! Wow - at $519, it was a steal for me. It has Windows 8 - a downside for some - but I was pleased with that! I believe that Windows 8 is not hard to use at all. Just as a Windows 7 and lower user going to a Mac will encounter difficulties at first, or vice versa, you may at first be confused about some new features. Get with the times and just read an online manual once, instead of trying your luck and getting frustrated. It becomes very easy to use, and I actually have really turned around from being uncertain about 8 to loving it.

Now for the cons - cons which, at this price, are not cons at all. It is not heavy, but it is certainly not a MacBook Air. But you must remember that unlike thinner laptops, this one can play DVDs and CDs. It does not have touchscreen, but I rarely use a touchscreen beyond trying it out when I first get a computer/laptop. It does not have a backlit keyboard - a bummer, but it's not necessary for me to work in the dark. But these qualities may be important to others.

I bought another laptop through Amazon that was more expensive, and it came with messed up screen colors, probably from a broken graphics card. I had to return it, and I was nervous about getting this one. But I'm very glad I took the risk! The colors are spot on.

If there are problems later, I will edit this review to report back. If not, assume everything is going swimmingly!

1 and takes a long while to set up - Norton found 2 viruses on it after un boxing - when I tried to long into the other account

Cons: The computer already had another name on it maia sphenger which indicated to me that it was used, which really is a pisser.
- it's windows 8.1 and takes a long while to set up
- Norton found 2 viruses on it after un boxing
- when I tried to long into the other account the screen just turned jet black with an arrow pointer in the middle for at least ten minutes so I had to control alt delete and from the task bar go to my computer and create a new account and from that account erase the old one which from time to time gives me weird ass admin issue now hah

Pros
- very good gaming computer I ran sins of a solar empire yesterday on it on the highest resolution and it didn't skip a beat
- it's battery at least for the first day lasted five hours
- once you defuckafy it and erase the account that's already on there it's a pretty good machine
- nothing was damaged on arrival
