Trackpad, keyboard, and touchscreen are lousy

I don't like to badmouth a product based on what appears to simply by a defective device, but I have to be honest: I hate this computer. From the beginning, the trackpad was problematic -- the right side was permanently stuck down and caused immense problems with clicking or selection or even moving the cursor. The touchscreen was an even worse alternative: it randomly taps all over the screen, closing tabs, windows, programs, clicking links I did not, and so on. I cleaned both, even though it was a brand new device, but nothing helped. I'm sending this back (a lengthy and painful process), but my advice would be to steer clear of it entirely.

Worst touchpad ever for me.
Looses its mind after a few screen closes and requires a restart - driver issues most likely....real real PITA!!!!
I have not found a solution for this.
Also the touchpad is magic. The entire pad is a touchpad AND a super huge button. Only pretend buttons near the bottom. Even the pretend buttons at the bottom can be used for your mousing. It has no true left or right button. This sucks if you are heavy handed. You go clicking and 1 out 10 chance it thinks you clicked the right button instead. So you find pop up screens asking you if you want to delete or rename a file instead of actual forward progress. AND IF YOU faster than the machine, watch your typing right after every click, as you might delete the icon you thought it was trying to process.

If you want touch screen, it works great, not sure why you would though.....kids don;t even use it, frankly we forget it has it....until....the touchpad dies and we have to use the onscreen keyboard to finish the task and restart.

Wish I had 12meg, 8 is just enough for all the who-its this thing runs.

Windows ATE is a lemon for sure...if you are reading, you probably already know this...but what is a person to do about that in the grand scheme of daily computing....jack

Lastly, don;t forget, it has no CD drive....when you need one, you will quickly find yourself wondering why you got this laptop. Like me. :)

A nice and fast machine (for average user), great feel to the keyboard, I like the backlit keys and the silver finish. Some more color details wouldn't hurt in the front though. Very good value. Touch screen is not of very much use, at least to me (since it cannot flip the whole way to turn it into a tablet), but I guess it has its use for drawing, making signatures, etc. It has a very good image, easy on your eyes for reading. I like the good sound too. Also pretty heavy for a no-DVD machine. I wanted a computer for work at home (but still possible to take on a trip) and have a lighter and smaller laptop to carry around daily, so this fits the bill 100%. It looks like a sturdy, solid piece of technology with good specs which will last.

So far so good. It is a great laptop for what I needed it for. I was looking for something cost effective with the power I needed. I wasn't looking for anything super fancy. But this has some frills - Windows 8 works just fine. I had a copy of Office Professional that I downloaded - All the programs work just great. I like how it comes with Lynda.com and some free courses. Even if I leave it on for a few days it doesn't lag and I don't need to reboot. Good basic computer.

Customer support is a nighmare

I bought this laptop at Staples, and the touchscreen failed while in warranty. When Dell finally agreed to replace it, and it came back from repairs COMPLETELY DOA.

Dealing with tech offshore tech support has been a complete nightmare.

At an on-site visit, which was hell to arrange, their local tech said that Dell had fried the motherboard. Dell reneged on an earlier promise to send me a new unit if onsite repair failed. The offshore rep told me "electronical gadgets can fail at any time", and refused to take responsibility for breaking the computer. He also refused to give me his supervisors name.

The system is designed by corporate to give consumers no recourse. Dell did not value my time or business at all. The unit has been useless for weeks. If your unit breaks, you are guaranteed to speak to someone with poor command of English and no accountability.

I ordered this computer TWICE. The first time I received it, it had multiple virus' upon turning it on the first time. Because of the excellent reviews, I figured it was a fluke, sent it back, and ordered another. I have had the current one for about a month and the mouse no longer works. While I am able to use the touch screen to get around, it is not convenient and I regret choosing Dell. I have had much better luck with Toshibas.
