Good laptop for the price

The laptop feels and looks pretty durable unlike some other cheap laptops. The power button looks a bit chintzy and I have noticed some visible distortions on the screen when I close it sometimes where my hand is which is a bit worrying but overall laptop looks like it is built pretty solid.

Keyboard: 2.5/5
The keys on the key board are smaller than on my old dell laptop i got in 2007. I keep hitting the wrong keys on this keyboard, I wouldn't buy this laptop if you plan to use it for a lot of typing. That being said my father's Toshiba laptop's keyboard is just as terrible so I think it is just the way laptops are going unfortunately.... I may just plug in a keyboard and the tv at my desk at some point but it is okay for now. I also have big hands so others may be okay with this keyboard.

Trackpad: 1.5/5
I think my old dell laptop from 2007 had a much better trackpad and not just because it had actual buttons. Getting the cursor to move was much easier on my old laptop. I am very glad that I bought a mouse.

Windows 8:
It is awful, people that are bad with computers hate it and people that are good with computers hate it even more. The changes to the user interface are awful.

Webcam:
I didn't use my webcam at all. I actually followed instructions that I found on a youtube video to remove it. It was pretty easy. It took 10 minutes. All I had to do was very carefully slide a flathead screw driver in the seam near the edges of the screen along the sides and the top. Then I ground myself to prevent ESD and unplugged the camera and removed (The camera had a bit of adhesive). The plastic snapped back into place so easy I was super happy.Read more ›

Great speed for the price

CHEAP i3 laptop. Great speed for the price.

Got the 3543 non-touch with windows 8.1 i3,4GB, 500GBHHD

Before turning on I replaced the hard drive with a 512GB Transcend SSD and upgraded the memory to 8GB

Removed secure boot and disabled PXE in BIOS

UPDATE! The Card reader, MEI, and Wifi Driver on Dell support site was not the Windows7 version even though it stated it was. I was able to get the Windows7 versions of these drivers from the previous model support site (Inspiron 3542).

Cons:
Touchpad: Cannot select multiple items with the mouse it is annoying going to try to fix this. I do not have the right click issue like other reviews said. UPDATE!: Was able to fix this by uninstalling the dell touchpad drivers and using the previous Inspiron 3542 touchpad driver.

Wifi Signal seems to be lower than my other laptops. If it doesn't improve I'm going to swap this out the 1704 dell wifi with a intel dual band centrino card. UPDATE! I ended up installing the Centrino WiFi card, performance seems a bit better. Available through amazon, just search Intel 6300.

Single Channel Memory (only 1 slot for memory) This can slow down performance.

SD Card slot only allows the card to stick halfway in.. So when a SD card is inserted it sticks out about a half inch out of the side of the laptop. Might not be a con for some people.

Summary:
I bought this for someone that just needed web browsing. Hopefully it lasts. The last Dell they had lasted for almost 10 years.

Touchpad Fix

At default settings, the touchpad is horrible. There is nothing separating the left and right click buttons from the touchpad, so if you apply too much pressure you will accidentally click the mouse while moving the cursor. The default touch pressure sensitivity is so high that it is easy to do this. You must go into the "Dell Touchpad" > "Touchpad Settings" application in the taskbar and change the default touch pressure lower.

Other than that, it is a great laptop. I got the version with the 5th generation i3 processor. This comes with Intel HD 5500 graphics, which can run a lot of non-intensive games like CS:GO, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod, League of Legends, and Minecraft just fine on relatively high settings.

I received this computer seven days ago, and it already has problems. The computer doesn't recognize the charger that came with it. Sometimes it says it's "plugged in but not charging," and several times I've seen an error message that it's not actually a Dell charger. When it does charge, it takes a few hours, even on the power saver setting.

There are other glitches as well - for instance, the "insert" key only works some of the time. I've never had these kind of problems in a brand new computer.

That's not to mention the design itself. It's a bit heavy. It loads pages slowly. The screen resolution is terrible. I've already switched back to using a 6-year-old Dell Inspiron 1525 because it's a better computer. I'll likely have to return this item. Don't waste your money - pay for a newer version or go with a different brand.
