An amazing desktop replacement is how I would classify this laptop! It's got a huge screen and nice weight to it so I would not want to lug this beast around with me so keep that in mind if you are looking for something that will be portable for you.

The laptop looks sleek and has a shiny plastic black finish that on the cover is very fingerprint prone.. All in all I would say there are 2 disappointments with this machine: It's fingerprint prone cover/finish and the fact that the screen resolution is only 1600x900 which is still technically HD but it's not full 1080p HD and it will be a downgrade if you are used the the sharp crispness of a 1080p monitor like I am.. But for the price and functionality of the machine I can't hark on it too much with it's mammoth screen!

What surprises me the most about this machine is it's startup time.. After initial Windows setup and removing all factory included software and installing a good AntiVirus, Malware and Regular programs I use all the time.. This machine literally boots to the login screen in less than 15 seconds.. It's almost as fast as my gaming rig that boots on a SSD! That's awesome!!

The battery life on this machine is great as well - I'd say it really is the 6 hours that it is rated at honestly.. Watching YouTube in bed for over 3 nights in a row on a single charge with some printing and browsing during the afternoon as well on a single charge? Another check for the awesome category!

The hard drive and wireless are snappy as well.. I mean no one moves alot of large files on their laptops but data transfer is fast enough and I get full downstream while wireless connected to my routers as well.Read more ›

The Inspiron 17 5000 series i5758 core i3 laptop is a well built, 17.3" screen laptop that is a good choice for a desktop replacement.
While this particular configuration isn't the most powerful, it does provide more than enough for everyday home and office tasks.
The 17.3" screen displays rich, vibrant colors when streaming online content or watching DVDs. Processor and graphics capably handle multimedia sources through a DVD burner, HDMI output and 3-in-1 media card reader. Also included are webcam and facial recognition.
This is a step up for me from a 15" touch screen, which was a novelty but not something I miss on a screen this large. I prefer the larger screen in a desktop replacement (although I do think touchscreens are much more useful in 11"-13" laptops).
The build quality is quite impressive for what is considered a budget laptop. Yes, it is somewhat heavy but a 17" laptop would not be most people's first choice if they were looking for portability.
The touchpad is a single, streamlined pad with good response and sensitivity to touch and swipe features (although I personally prefer dedicated right and left mouse bars on a touchpad).
Set up was pretty straightforward and everything so far has worked smoothly. Facial recognition is interesting but not something I think I will use on a regular basis.
My frustrations are more with Windows 8.1, not with the Dell hardware. I have not upgraded to Windows 10 yet but you do get the option to reserve a free upgrade as soon as you begin set up.
I am not a gamer so I can't speak to its performance in that area. But I think this is a good choice for college students, as a family desktop replacement or for anyone who watches a lot of online video content.The features, performance and build quality make it a good value.

Good Entry Level PC for Home Use

Dell has been selling PC’s since 1985 and the Inspiron line since the early 2000’s. Inspiron is their low price entry for laptops. This is a mature product from an established company and, as far as any laptop can be, a safe and sound purchase at a good price. Some of its competitors are HP Pavilion, Acer Aspire, and Toshiba Laptop.

A laptop is a collection of software and hardware put together by the manufacture and tweaked to do the job needed by its owner. Because this is a low-end entry there isn’t any one demographic target. It can equally be used by a college student, a business professional, or a home entertainment PC. It isn’t for someone who travels a lot because of its size, 17+ inches, and weight, 7.5 lbs., or for someone who wants touchscreen or a high end gamer.

The stand out feature is the 17 seventeen inch screen. It functions well streaming from Netflix, Amazon, YouTube or reading from your own CD/DVD. The speakers sound better than the 2014 HP Pavilion laptop I have. I’ve been using this laptop when I need to read anything longer than a few paragraphs or when I have multiple screens open and am cutting and pasting between them or to watch videos.
The adaptation to Windows 8 is a little bit awkward and I found myself having to adjust.

What I don’t like about as a touch typist is the built in mouse pad and buttons, the section isn’t distinct enough and awkward to reach. The distance from the “F” key the left click on the pad on my Pavilion is 4.5 inches on this DELL PC it’s 5.5 inches. That extra inch is too far of a stretch as a touch typist to make it useable for lots of typing.
