An OK, heavy, laptop with middling performance and average battery life and a big screen

The Inspiron 17 5000 Series laptop is, to me, a balancing act of compromises. Dell wants to provide a super large screen on a laptop, but then keep the price reasonable. And that's what they've done.

The issue for me, however, is the resolution on the screen. It is certainly nice to have a nice, large 17" screen, but the resolution, instead of being an expected 1920x1080 (1080p), what you have is....1600x900. They get away with calling it HD+, because 720p is considered HD, whereas 1080p is "full" HD. For me, the thing is that to get the 1080p screen, you also have to add $100 to the price, which also adds touch - which isn't something everyone may want.

That being said, the screen does look nice, though for those wondering it is glossy. Personally I prefer the non-glossy professional model Dells (Latitude line) to these, but this is what is most often in a consumer laptop.

The other issue I have is the hard drive. Sure, getting 1 TB of space is great, but the performance benefits of dropping in a solid state drive (SSD) cannot be understated. This machine takes 55-75 seconds to boot. If this had a solid state drive, it would likely be booting from complete power off in 15 or less. What I would have preferred to see, since there should be more than enough space inside the laptop body, is a 128 GB SSD and a 1 TB platter based drive for storage. To add insult to injury here, rather than utilizing a faster 7200 RPM drive, they've dropped in a 5400 RPM drive, which adds to the slowness of boot time and application launching.

What is fantastic, however, is the processor. It is running the Intel i7-5500U, which means dual core, 4 threads for faster processing of whatever you want to do.Read more ›

Most usable laptop I've ever had

I like this laptop better than any other that I have tried. I've always been a desktop person, and I have always thought that the laptops I have had were limited and each came with its own peculiar quirks. They were travel computers only.

This is the _only_ one I've ever used that I felt would make an adequate replacement for a desktop for general use.

I like the keyboard; it's complete without crowding, the surface is soft without being sloppy, it's quiet, and it has backlighting--all wonderful for using the computer while someone else is sleeping.

The touchpad is the first one I've ever been able to use precisely without resorting to at least an occasional external mouse.

I'm not fully used to a computer (as opposed to some sort of tablet) with a touch screen, but already a pattern is emerging of using the keyboard, the touchpad, and the touch screen together as a blended input system in which using each as convenient is almost instinctive.

Resolution is high, and I have seen no screen flicker at all, even while the computer is being moved. Films looked great and ran smoothly. The speakers are good and the sound is clear, but maximum volume as delivered isn't very loud. It is loud enough for one or three people watching a film, but not for inviting the neighborhood to join you around your living room. Husband said he could clearly hear what they were saying in _Gettysburg_ from about 14 feet away, but there was no ambient noise.

Speed--I can't answer for the extremes, being neither a fanatic gamer nor a scientific researcher. It handles photo editing fine.Read more ›

Good for text work, with a few keyboard issues

I got this computer for word processing and page layout, so I can't speak to using it for gaming or heavy graphics work (but you would probably want a faster computer for that). For text work, it is sufficient, but has a few foibles.

- Screen. The screen is just under 8.5" by 15", which supports having two almost-full-sized pages side-by-side. (Two full sized 8.5x11 pages would need 8.5x22, but some of that is margin). The screen is nice and sharp for text work. I've also watched a few SD videos, and those were ok, but don't expect to get anywhere near the claimed six-hour battery life if you're using this as a media machine (the battery is swappable however, which is a very nice feature).

- Noise. If you put the machine up to your ear you can hear the ocean. Or maybe Xiamen. (but seriously...) The fan isn't silent, but mostly just sounds like a gentle whooshing. The noise is louder when the machine is warmer, which is to be expected, but the laptop doesn't heat up as much as I expected it to - maybe because the components aren't as tightly packed as in my smaller machine.

- Keyboard. The keyboard is a mixed blessing. On the one hand (literally), the keys have good key travel and a nice click-tactile feel (and they're full sized!). On the other hand, there is a distracting metallic rattle while you type. I've seen this on other machines, and it doesn't necessarily mean it's a poor quality keyboard (maybe just metal switches instead of plastic), but it's distracting. The keyboard surface also has a bit of flex to it.

- Touchpad. The touchpad is again a mixed blessing. The left and right button areas also have a nice tactile click to them, and I have no complaints about the pad itself.Read more ›
