Dell Inspiron 15 5000 is a serious mid-range laptop computer designed to be a desktop replacement computer. in my opinion, it has all the features to deliver a solid experience for any needs, except, perhaps, hardcore gaming. This Inspiron comes with an Intel Core i5 5200U processor, which was released by Intel in January of 2015 (there's a noticeable performance boost compared to older i5 CPUs). 5200U is a 64 bit, 2-core processor, with a base frequency clocked at 2.2Ghz (2.7 max). In other words, the CPU has sufficient power for any office and multimedia purposes as well as more demanding applications and multitasking.

Other important features worth mentioning are:

- A DVD +/-RW drive, which will let you read and write DVDs.
- 1TB hard drive, which allows for plenty of room for music, photos, documents, etc.
- A full-size back-lit, spill resistant keyboard, with a very comfortable keys design *
- A media card reader: a must-have these days, especially if you own or plan to own a digital camera
- A large 15.6 inch display **
- An HDMI port: a must-have for any desktop replacement computer, or if you plan to use this laptop for travel and presentations
- A face recognition software for easy login
- 3 USB3 ports for lightning fast data transfers from external devices such as USB flash drives or external hard drives.
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- Built-in LAN port
- A 40 work hours 4 cell battery.

The laptop cover is silver and has a very attractive texture, which makes it look somewhat metallic. It is a nice design feature that I certainly appreciate.

First impressions

This computer is replacing a Sony Vaio laptop that I absolutely hate. I've been using it for a couple of days and I'm pretty impressed.

I feel like the specs are decent for the price range. Over the last couple of years laptops have been getting more expensive and less powerful. It's made shopping for a new laptop really frustrating. Five years ago I got a really nice HP laptop for under $900. I haven't been able to find anything even close to the specs of that laptop for less than $1000 in recent years. This little laptop comes the closest to that kind of deal. It's a decent processor, okay RAM and a nice screen.

The only real complaint I have is that it doesn't have a good graphics card. If it had a better graphics card, it would be an amazing deal.

It only comes with 8 GB of RAM, but it can be upgraded to 16 GB. I highly recommend doing that upgrade. You can get 16 GB of RAM for under $90. I noticed a significant improvement in performance when I made that upgrade.

It comes with a bit of bloatware, but not as much as some other computers I have had throughout the years. The very first thing I did was uninstall McAfee and DropBox, both of which were maxing out the virtual disk. I also installed System Mechanic, which found 150 MB of wasted space and 131 registry errors right out of the box. System Mechanic is also great for stopping unnecessary startup programs, and even includes anti-virus and anti-malware applications, which is why you don't need McAfee (McAfee stinks anyway).

If you get any windows 8 computer, I recommend disabling superfetch and prefetch. These are windows services that are supposed to improve performance, but I've found these hog both memory and virtual disk space on every windows 8 laptop I have had.Read more ›

Great Compromise on size/capabilities

This computer does many things well, but nothing spectacularly. The other reviewers did a great job on some of the specs, so here's some miscellaneous things:
1- It's heavier than other computers in this size range, but unless you plan to hold it up while using it, it really doesn't impact use that much.
2- Battery life for me has been between 3 1/2 and 4 hours with full brightness and constant use.
3- I don't like the touchpad...it's good, but it's a bear to get tweaked, and still seems to have minor glitches.
4- The keyboard layout is great...I like the spacing between keys, having a full numeric pad is great, the key functions you use (e.g., volume, birghtness, page up/down) are all direct buttons with no need for a function key.
5- I have indeed spilled coffee on it already, no issues (yet). This seems like a good product for a food klutz like me.
6- Once I got rid of some of the bloatware it runs great- even with a good # of chrome extensions that are memory intensive.
7- The size of the monitor is just big enough to be able to have 2 windows open side-by-side and work efficiently.
8- One thing I wish it had...that old light that would turn on when the computer was running internal processes, booting up, etc....sometimes the computer slows down for a few minutes, and it'd be nice to know whether it's the computer doing normal processing or my programs about to crash (it does have a charging light on the front).

Overall, if it's priced right, it's a great compromise between my 17" beast of a laptop and my 14" need-a-magnifying-glass laptop. Solid quality all around, good specs, and comfortable ergonomics.
