Great workhorse computer. No frills like touchscreen. Runs the familiar and capable Windows 7. Has a nice fast Intel 4th generation Intel Core i7-4500U processor, 8GB Memory, 1 TB hard drive, and integrated Intel HD graphics with a bright 15.6" HD display. I like the fact that it came loaded with the MS Office software so that once I purchased the suite that I wanted online at the Microsoft store it was setup and ready to use in no time. I used LapLink PCMover (also from Amazon) to transfer files and applications from my older Dell XPS and added a WD My Passport 1 TB external hard drive (from Amazon). Now I am up and running and very happy with the new set up. Thanks Amazon for having everything I needed, making it easy to chose the right components and getting them to me promptly before the failing hard drive on my older Dell XPS gave up.

I am not an expert on computers, just a simple user, so bear in mind while reading. I have to say I have used both PCs and Macs, and I am leaning more toward Mac computer than PCs. HOWEVER, I will admit that PCs have come back very close to Mac in the last 4/5 years.

The things I like about this laptop:
1. Performance. By far, this is the most appealing aspect of this new laptop by Dell. You get an Intel Core i7 5500 2.5 GHz Processor with 16 GB DDR3L SDRAM Memory and 1000 GB Hard Drive for less than $1,000. There is absolutely no way you can get this performance under 1K on a Mac. This is a very powerful argument to buy this laptop, despite of the drawbacks I am pointing out at the bottom.
2. 15.6 Inch FHD Touch Screen Display. Another strong argument for this laptop to be considered as a first choice today to be bought against Macs or other laptops. The screen is huge, and for me this was important because I only have one laptop and I do work with images and other design software, so I can't work with an 11-13 inch screen as they are so popular among Macs. Also, keep in mind this is touchscreen, which Macs don't have.
3. The third positive I find on this laptop is not the merit of this laptop, I guess, or Dell company, but Microsoft: WINDOWS 8.1 and FREE UPGRADE to Windows 10 when available. As I said, Windows has come a long way, and it is a very robust, user friendly, and powerful operating system. When they get a way to be as powerful as Mac Os to eliminate virus threats, it will probably be the end of Mac as we know it.
4. Random: Face Recognition. I did not know about this and I do like it a lot! You can sign in your computer, and other web sites, by the computer recognizing your face.

This laptop is a disappointing I have an I7 intel processor on a desktop than's really fast, this one in this laptop is more like an I3.

Also I'm thinking this was a repair job for when I first turned it on it came up in the option mode that the computer was not shut down
properly, never seen that happen on a new computer. Also the packing box looked like it was repacked, buyer beware.

This laptop is not nearly as heavy as I thought it would be. It processes quickly and was a cinch to set up. Other than the annoying McAfee software (which comes on every Dell nowadays), I absolutely love it. I run MS Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and various video streaming applications. I haven't managed to cause the machine to slow down no matter how many programs I run at a time. ;) The keyboard is comfortable for my hands (and I do a LOT of typing), and the number keypad is very handy.

Style Name: 16GB RAM/ Windows 8 Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I got this laptop and, after using it for a few days, recommended it to my mom. She is a pretty proficient computer user, but cannot troubleshoot to save her life. the reasons I recommended this for her is because:
1. It is powerful and fast. Apps and downloads are fast! Streaming services work great and are easy for her to find and use with the apps.
2. It has a DVD drive. She still has a large collection of DVDs and uses this as a portable DVD player. the screen is large and perfect for this and the touchscreen allows her to quickly pause and play DVDs and YouTube videos.
3. The keyboard has a good feel to it, is backlit, and has a full number pad.
4. It has a good amount of memory (for all of the stuff she downloads and doesn't even realize) plus photos and apps.
5. She was able to quickly catch on to how to switch between the apps and 'normal' windows start page. (this is actually of a feature of Windows)

As for me, I use this as my primary computer now. I find it to be a bit too bulky for portability and the battery life isn't great. I get about 2 hours out of it before I need to charge it. However, it runs my software efficiently and is definitely faster than any other computer I have had. I also like that my 3 yr old can easily use the touchscreen to play apps and videos.

Speed was very disappointing. Not what I would expected from a I7 processor. My 6 year old Compaq is only slightly slower.

Our household is not terribly demanding when it comes to a new computer -- it has to surf the web, do a little bit of word processing, stream a few TV shows or other videos, download the occasional document, photo, or short video. No video games, Skyping, MOOCs, remote monitoring, etc. On the other hand, the computer is in use pretty much all day and online for virtually all of that time.

The Dell Inspiron is more than enough computer for us. Compared to our old laptop, a four year old Acer Aspire, the Dell is fast and quiet. I love the lighted keyboard. It has roughly ten times the memory we will probably ever use, it has features we will only use in order to test them for this review such as the microphone, camera, and the touch screen. The DVD drive works on first use without having to set up the software. It plays DVDs from all regions. Even though we have been using a 17-inch screen, the shift to a 15-inch screen has been painless.

The only thing I don't like about the Dell is Windows 8.1 and it won't be long until it's replaced with Windows 10. Set-up out of the box took about 20 minutes, more to install security software if you want to add to the McAfee 30-day included security.
