The Dell Inspiron i3542-6666BK is a pretty good laptop that runs fast and has plenty of space, but suffers from poor design and build quality. For the price of the laptop, it's a pretty good deal. You probably won't find a cheaper laptop with the same hardware. I like the computer and give it a 3/5. I recommend it to anyone who needs a cheap, 15 inch laptop with a full keyboard and higher-end processor, RAM, and hard drive. Pros, Cons, and category reviews follow.

Pros: Processor, RAM, Hard drive space, Lightweight, Battery life

Cons: Speakers, Plastic case, Ethernet port, Bottom case design, Loud trackpad

Score: 3/5

Hardware: The computer runs nice and fast with the i5-4210u processor. The integrated graphics work well and will run older or low resource games. (League of Legends, Minecraft, and Fallout 3 work well on this machine). With 8gb of RAM, there is plenty of memory to go around for all you applications and the integrated graphics. You won't need to upgrade the memory for a while. The 1 TB hard drive is spacious, and would never fill up for an average consumer. The "pop-out" style DVD tray seems a little janky, but is a standard on Windows computers I guess. The keyboard is full sized and has a keypad, which isn't useful to me, but might be to some. There is no backlight on the keyboard, which isn't needed, but is really appreciated and is a nice touch on a laptop. The trackpad is a little small for the size of the computer. It is a single piece of plastic with a left click function on the bottom left and a right click function on the bottom right. The click noise is quite loud, leading to me to use the tap-to-click feature when I have to be quiet.

This product loses one star for two reasons and two reasons ONLY:

1. The product details state that there are two ports for USB 2.0 and three ports for USB 3.0, alluding the thought that there are 5 total USB ports. There are actually only 3 total USB ports. The assumption behind the misleading details is that two are interchangeable between both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.
2. There is ONLY one slot total for RAM expansion. This is not a huge Con, as the processor is only dual core and will not perform any better than its max 8GB of RAM anyhow.

I purchased this laptop without hesitation after reading the product specs I'd be getting for the price. I work as an IT Specialist and intend on using this computer mainly for my work presentations, emails and storage. I'll attempt to write this review, keeping it as understandable as possible with as little tech-talk as possible.

First off, I can't believe there are negative reviews for a laptop under $400 with this many goodies, but I digress. I'm actually using this laptop as I type this review and I feel like I can type for hours. It is VERY ergonomically designed and resultantly I rarely hit keys I don't intend to strike. A common issue with laptops is the pesky touchpad often gets in the way while trying to type, forcing the user to choose between either disabling the touchpad or throwing the laptop through a window. The touchpad on the Inspiron 15, however, is perfectly placed, slightly off-centered between the home keys giving a perfect amount of room to rest the palms comfortably upon the lower (and by the way lengthened) smooth area of the laptop for maximum comfort and dramatically reduced touchpad interruptions. The feel and texture of the keyboard keys are also pleasant beneath the tips of the fingers.

I gave up on Dell long ago. A few years ago I went through 4 replacements on one model because the plastic of that Dell case kept cracking and breaking at the hinges. Then I had two more where the screen light went out. Then I went to HP and had four hard disks crash, and another where the screen went out. I eventually got the HP which is also listed here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FJXVRM8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00FJXVRM8&linkCode=as2&tag=newcams-20&linkId=5DYH3AYT66X6BDAA

At first the laptop seemed to do the job (and it was not that expensive) so I stuck with that, but with a slow processor, and 2 GB ram it was forever disk swapping. It was time for something new.

So, putting together a few requirements I came up with a rather small list of one, this Dell Inspiron! This laptop comes with Windows 8.1 which is surprisingly not nearly as bad as I had feared. The screen has a right click on start button that lets me do a lot of the things I am used to with older versions of windows. It's still a bit disconcerting to not have my beloved programs pop up, but I've found ways around that by pinning the most used to the task bar, or making a desktop icon. I've managed to copy over every program from my old Vista with no problems.

This Dell is fast, things happen right away. My old laptop took almost 10 minutes to reboot and bring back the software I was using. This one is back up with all my software in the wink of an eye. I have to confess that there are faster laptops with faster boot times, but this is good enough for me. I love the screen. It's bright and the high resolution gives me more real estate than my old laptop.
