Big beautiful screen, but limited by onboard graphics, no Gigabit ethernet, only a DVD drive and only one USB 3.0 port

The most noticeable feature of the Dell Inspiron 17 5000 Series i5758-9286SLV is its screen which is huge for a laptop. With a weight of over 7 lbs and a width of 16.41 inches, this is a mobile desktop rather than an easily portable laptop. With its big, beautiful 17.3-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Truelife LED-Backlit touch display, one would think of this as perfect for gaming, watching movies or graphic design. Unfortunately, the 5000 Series doesn't excel at any of these due to limitations in the specifications. What the computer does excel in is offering the user a lot of screen size, a chassis that feels solid and enough processing power for most other day to day tasks.

Processor and speed
The computer has a latest generation (January 2015) core i7 5500u 2.4 GHz processor with two cores. The processor supports a maximum of 16 GB of DDR3L SDRAM (included). It also supports LPDDR3. This processor is currently the lowest performing of the i7 processors that Intel is currently selling. It actually performs about as well as the lower, Intel Core i5-5200U which costs less. However, the i7 5500u's low energy consumption makes it ideal for a laptop and the processor should have more than enough power for office and multimedia purposes as well as for some more demanding applications.

Hard Drive
The hard drive is 1000 GB 5400 RPM. Other, faster spinning drives are available, but not for this laptop. However, you would really only notice the difference when moving large files. With 1000 GB of space, this drive has a lot of room for movies, music, photos, etc. Alternatively, the more expensive Dell 7000 series has a hybrid hard drive.Read more ›

Now that's what you get, here's what I think of how it performs compared to my experience with other laptops. The first thing I noticed was how heavy it is 7.5 pds which felt like carrying lead compared to my 3.5 pd models. But, after a few tosses over the shoulder, I barely noticed it anymore. Second, the 17.3in touch screen is very nice. Colors are crisp, sharp, and vibrant - minute details were apparent to me (often without my glasses) - things that would ordinarily go unnoticed. (ex. buttons on a blouse & a politician's tie clasp). With such an impressive screen I couldn't wait for my husband to try a few games and his graphic design stuff. But without a dedicated graphics card, the performance of these more complex applications is lackluster. I thorough enjoyed watching movies. It felt like watching a small, flat screen HDTV.Read more ›

A larger laptop that's a great desktop replacement

Let's address the elephant in the room (literally) first. This is one large laptop. I have a 17" HP laptop that I purchased a few years ago so it was time for an upgrade. This one is bigger and, most importantly for some, much heavier. At 7.4 lbs it's one sturdy machine but it's hardly the laptop I would buy for portable use. To me it's definitely a great replacement for a home desktop with the added benefit of being able to move it around the house. It's a good looking device with a textured silvery gray cover that won't show fingerprints (unlike the black, shiny cover on my HP). Size aside, my experience is all positive.

The screen is a 17.3" LED touch display. I'm so used to touch screens now that I love this feature. (I have a Dell Inspiron 11" laptop/table convertible and I've gotten in the habit of using the touchscreen in PC mode and it's second nature now. And, btw, the 11" is the perfect size for portable use, with or without the tablet mode.) There's a full size keyboard with a number keypad and a very large, very responsive touchpad. Bonus - the keyboard is backlit which I wouldn't think was that important but it's actually a very useful feature in low light. The laptop boots up very quickly btw. On slower computers I've gotten in the habit of putting them in sleep mode. With this one I have no issue powering it off to save the battery and then powering it up again as needed.

A trade-off: there's no dedicated graphics card. For me that's not a problem but it might be for others depending on their usage. But the trade-off is less power consumption and a cooler running machine. The spec. calls for 6 hrs. on battery power. I'd say realistically it's closer to 5 hrs.Read more ›
