So far I am really liking the laptop. As long as you are not expecting a blown out gaming laptop, it performs admirably. I will update this review the more I use it. I will list some of my thoughts below:

Update: I have been using the laptop more and it has not changed my initial feelings on it. It
Has done everything I ask of it so far and has not given me any trouble. I did some light gaming with minecraft, Xonotic, and Stunt Rally and as I said its not really a gaming machine but the games ran smooth on medium settings and were playable. I have updated some info below:

1: Off centered keyboard takes a bit getting comfortable with, but the back lit keyboard is a great feature.

2: Battery time shows only 2 hour run time at full charge. Need to look into this, as my performance settings might not be set optimally.

Update: Messing with power save features I was able to get around 3 hours to show on a fully charged battery. I have not tested it for accuracy yet.

3: Its a pretty big laptop but weight is manageable and pretty thin. Not what I would recommend for travelling, more of a desktop replacement which is what I got it for.

4: Performance is pretty smooth and quick. Installing software did not take as long as I though it would, and I did not have any trouble.

5: RAM seems to be maxed out at 8GB with only a single DIMM slot, and you can not control how much RAM gets shared with the video cores.

Update: 6: Touchpad is a bit "touchy" :) - it is multi-touch and can use gestures. It works well for me most of the time. Other users of the laptop complain. Changing the settings should be able to help. two finger scrolling and zooming work well enough. It is useless for gaming though.Read more ›

Really good laptop for the price

This is an excellent laptop, much higher build quality then I was expecting. I love the backlit keyboard which was the main reason I went for this model. The lighting is really good, has two brightness levels, and the keyboard has a very nice high quality feel to it. The keyboard is tight feeling and quiet, not cheap and clicky feeling like the cheaper laptops. The number pad is also really nice. The touchpad also works well too. I don't really miss having a DVD drive all that much, my old one had it and I didn't really use it ever so I won't miss having that. The battery is underneath the bottom cover, it does lift up and out for replacement but it's not hot swappable like the older laptops. The battery life that I have gotten so far has been around 3.5 hours but that has been with fairly heavy usage including installing stuff on battery, I will update if the average goes up more with lighter usage. The fan on this does seem to run a little louder than my older hp but it's not really that noticeable unless you're in a totally silent room. That being said the laptop does stay very cool. The speakers are pretty good for a laptop but you need to tweak them with the waves maxx audio or disable the waves maxx completely and they sound decent enough and are pretty loud. I actually ended up disabling the maxx and think it sounds better but that's just me. Another thing I like about this laptop is that on the bottom it has a nice easy access panel with 2 screws and you have easy access to the hard drive, wireless card (m.2) and the 1 ram slot (which maxes at 8gb anyways). Swapped the samsung spinpoint 5400rpm hard drive it came with for a seagate solid state hybrid drive and that made it quite a bit more responsive.Read more ›

Laptop is amazing and was a great value. I did not experience any of the issues that the others complained about. Make sure when its plugged in you set the CPU to run at full speed and to only slow down when on battery power.

Very good cost-benefit and performance

Very good cost-benefit. The design is beautiful and very thin. The fan output is smartly placed, where it is never blocked. The air cooling input, on the other hand, might get blocked in some situations, thus leading to overheating. It would definitely be better placed in the side. The touchpad is big and precise, but its buttons sometimes do not work very well. The display provides excellent image, but the resolution could be bigger. Although it is good enough. The battery life is not great, but considering its small size and weight, I gotta say the AMD APU A-7300 is doing a very good job providing very good processing power with small energy consumption. Yeah, no complaints regarding processing power. Particularly, I am very pleased with the machine because I replaced the HDD by an OCZ SSD, which is much faster, a power saver and reliable. The lack of CD/DVD player so far has not upset me. If you know your way, you can easily do without it, using pendrives for OS installations and things like that. Regarding software accompanying the OS Installation, I can't complain. There isn't much besides Dell tools and the antivirus trial. I always delete all those things, repartition and do it my way. But I was happy to see the default installation was not bloated with a hundred useless stupid software that no one needs. In summary, it is a machine with room for improvement, but it is awesome for US$ 450, and replacing the HDD for an SSD will give you top performance. I do recommend it!
