I am, as one can read from my previous reviews of Dell's XPS 12 series, a fan of these convertible laptops, which offer a touchscreen/tablet mode as well as a full fledged laptop mode with a full sized attached keyboard.

While the XPS 12 was targeted to the premium ultrabook segment in price and performance, this Insprion 13 700 series aims at a lower price point, and makes some concessions as a result. Most obviously, the construction, which uses a sturdy rubberized finish plastic instead of metal, and the hard drive in the cheaper models, which is a hybrid mechanical (Seagate) drive. That said, the case is actually quite aesthetically pleasing and nice to the touch, and the hard drive is easily replaced. (More on that below).

Dell offers this laptop in several configurations. The important specs that are common across all the configurations:

Haswell processor/Intel HM87 chipset (better battery life than earlier generations)
Intel integrated 4400 HD graphics (good enough for most purposes except high end gaming)

I just received this laptop from Amazon and I was able to buy it for $638 on a pre-Black Friday deal.

Three quick notes:
- The product description says the computer has a Dell Wireless-N 1708 + Bluetooth 4.0. This is incorrect, it actually has an Intel Wireless AC 7260 card, which is much better than the Dell.
- This is a Microsoft Signature PC like the computers they sell at the Microsoft Stores. This means there is no bloatware or any unwanted third party programs installed with the computer. This is awesome and the computer boots up extremely fast because of it.
- After replacing the HDD with a SSD, my laptop weighs exactly 3.5 lbs.

Soon after I received this laptop I made a recovery USB in Windows and then opened up the laptop to replace the hard drive with a 256GB SSD. This process went smoothly but I had to get Windows reactivated by calling an automated phone number. This took around 5 minutes and was dummy proof and painless.

The laptop itself has a rubbery feel, which is actually pretty nice. You're not going to lose grip of this thing. This is my first 2-in-1 laptop and I was concerned that this laptop was a little too heavy for my taste. I was also considering buying the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, Yoga 3 Pro, and the Yoga Tablet 2. I think most people can agree that Lenovo is one of the leaders when it comes to 2-in-1 laptops. I decided on this Dell because of price over anything else. The Yoga 3 Pro just came out so a similarly spec'd version is around $1300. The plus side of being more than twice the price of this Dell is that the Yoga 3 Pro is around a pound lighter. I couldn't justify the price so I skipped the Yoga 3 Pro. The Yoga 2 Pro has significant sales going on right now since it's been replaced by the Yoga 3 Pro.Read more ›

And now, the review!:

I have previously reviewed an older Dell 2-in-1 and was not too thrilled with the design.

This new Dell 2-in-1, however, is a whole different story and extremely refreshing. In fact, I would say this is a competitor to the Surface Pro 3 and Yoga 3 Pro - but Dell offers a similar experience for much less money.

Dell made some outstanding design choices with the Dell Insprion 13 7000 Series. First off, is the luxurious feel - the material it is made of feels almost velvety in texture and appears to be some plastic/rubber hybrid. If you have ever held a Lumia 1020, the texture of this Dell is very similar to that. The design is very attractive as well with tapered edges that give the laptop a premium look - again resembling the Lumia 1020 ironically.

The screen is a touchscreen that works quite well and has 180 degree hinges similar to the Lenovo Yoga. This allows the screen to be positioned in many ways or completely folded over to be used as a tablet. The tablet cannot be detached and it is too heavy to hold in one hand, but it works well for lap or table usage. Picture quality is outstanding and has some of the brightest and crispest images I've seen on a 2-in-1.

The keyboard is backlit and both it and the touchpad is very responsive. Dell really nailed it with the design.Read more ›
