Product Description

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection. When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge.

Just so y'all understand what I'm working with here: I've had my MacBook since 2008, and even though I want a new laptop, it just isn't in the budget for me right now. Consequently, every time my charger craps out on me, I get an ulcer about the $80 replacement that I desperately need, as my MacBook now barely lasts an hour off the charger.

A few years ago, I bought a charger that looked exactly like the Apple one, for about 30$ off of Amazon. I never wrote a review and came to regret it about a month ago because it was time to replace that charger, and would thus have to start the search over again. I was extremely hesitant about this one, since it looks more like a typical laptop charger, and not the square Apple one. I read the reviews about sparks and fires and, with the last $20 to my name, ordered this one.

And I have to say, I'm about 90% satisfied. A more accurate review of my feelings would be 4.5 stars, as it charges my MacBook just as quickly as the old one, and my house hasn't caught on fire yet. I got some sparks when I first plugged it directly into the wall, which put the fear of god in me and forced me to drag out an unused power strip so it can sit by itself, and I can turn the power strip off when I'm not using my charger/need to leave the house. I haven't needed to transport my laptop anywhere yet, though if I do, I'll probably take the power strip with me just in case. The only other cons are that the brick gets really hot (par for the course with chargers, I'd say) and the plug's prongs don't fit snugly into the outlet, they wiggle and are a bit loose. Just more incentive for me to use a flat power strip and avoid that problem altogether.

UPDATE 1/10/2015: well, that's all she wrote. The plastic piece holding the wire to the metal L-tip dislodged (after normal wear and tear) and the rest of the wiring unraveled fairly quickly after that. Charger no longer works, and it looks like I'm back on the market for a new charger.

I plugged this in and it charged for about 10 minutes before it quit working. I can't get it to work at all now. I will be returning it as soon as I can get to a UPS store. Junk Junk JUNK!!!

The danger of buying an after-market charger for a laptop is that they are fire hazards. A quick Google search will prove I'm not making that up. I was hoping this charger would be different, but it's not.

There are two main issues that I've seen that make it is just as much a fire hazard as other after-market chargers:

1) It gets incredibly hot! So hot that if you touch it you will get first degree burns. If your macbook is low on charge and you are running a game, DO NOT REACH DOWN AND TOUCH THE CHARGER!
2) Mine sparked just now. The first couple months it was fine other than the overheating, but it literally sparked just now. I saw sparks come out of it and touch my carpet. If I wasn't around when it was charging, and those sparks caught on to something, my house could have been gone.

This charger is EXTREMELY dangerous. Please, do not buy if you love your family.

DO NOT pay more for a brand name. This brand works perfectly for my macbook pro. No issues.

I have had this charger for 8 months, and it works perfectly.

I just went through my purchase history to buy a second one for my study, and am surprised by all the low reviews. I have never seen the sparks, other people are talking about. It's probably that their electrical sockets are old.

Great product for a great price.

I purchased this item four months ago. While it worked right away, it stopped working this morning and isn't eligible for return. It's a defective product and the seller does not have a means by which to return it. Don't buy.

Worked for 5 weeks, then simply stopped. Asking about the "Product guarantee 2 years free maintenance" via email has been unanswered.

Garbage. I bought 2 of these 2 months ago. Last week, one went bad and just now, the other one just failed on me. Waste of $40.
