Slim backpack, not for slim laptops

I was looking for a simple, slim backpack that I could take on my daily commute. I work in a semi-casual office, so I wanted something comfortable but that didn't look like I'd just come in from the high Sierras. I carry my laptop every day, and usually have my Kindle, a couple pens, and a notepad along. Sometimes a Clif bar or another snack, but I travel pretty light. This bag looked like just the ticket, with a basic, good-looking design and a focus on just carrying your laptop and a few bare necessities. It has a sternum strap, which is a great extra feature for those of us with back problems who don't want to hunch our shoulders to keep the bag from slipping around. It's also got broad, comfortable straps and a really solid top handle. Unfortunately, it doesn't do the trick for me, and I'll be sending it back.

It's hard to tell from the images, but this backpack is really designed for lugging around a big, clunky, old-school laptop. The laptop compartment takes up most of the space (all of the height and width, and nearly all of the depth), and doesn't feature a built-in sleeve, or straps, or anything to keep your laptop secure once it's in there. My 15" Dell rattled around uncomfortably inside, and my wife's 13" Macbook was even worse. Probably one of the big 17" desktop-replacement laptops would fit snugly; anything smaller is just going to bounce.

That's the kind of design decision you'd expect on a laptop bag from 2005, and maybe that's when Everest came up with this concept. Still, there are a lot of big, unwieldy laptops out there, and maybe you need a backpack for yours. Even if that's the case, I'd still advise against this one.

Slim, well built bag for my work laptop

I park a mile away from my office and my messenger bag was starting to bother me on the long walks. Add to that, I started using a skateboard to cover the distance faster. This bag was the solution I was looking for.

First, the laptop compartment. This is a simple laptop compartment that is about the right size for a 15.6" or 16" laptop. I might fit 17", but I haven't tried yet. It has light padding and a solid zipper.

Next there is a fairly standard storage pocket with its own zipper about the same size as the laptop compartment, but without padding. It fits a light rain jacket, badge, keys, a book, and has some smaller pockets sewn into it. Pretty standard.

Finally there's a pretty normal slim zipper pocket you could fit a kindle or iPad mini in.

What I really like about this bag is that it's very solid and keeps the weight right up against my back. I never feel the heavy work laptop swinging on my back. Everything is kept tight and I never feel like my balance is being thrown off. This is important on a moving skateboard, but also really helpful just going up stairs and moving around in general. I never get caught on anything.

The only con I can say is the handle connects the two straps at the very top and I can feel that rubbing on my neck if I cinch the bag up too tight on my shoulders. Other than that, this is a perfect bag to move the computer, power brick, and rain gear.

Great slim, plain color backpack

I was looking for a slim laptop backpack, to hold my laptop, a notebook, and some pens/pencils. This fit the bill perfectly.
Another requirement was that it was solid black color with no egregious logos or designs. This, for some reason, is a much harder requirement to fulfill than one might think, with today's companies making their logo bigger and bigger, and adding extra "flair" to differentiate their product design.
Everest won me over with their simple, black on black design.
It is a very slim backpack, with room enough for a couple notebooks, laptop, charger and a few other small accessories. Not much else. If you are looking for a go-to backpack for your kitchen sink and other "necessities," look elsewhere. If you're looking to travel lightly, this is the pack for you.
I've used the backpack every day for a few months now, and it's held up very well. I'll update if this changes.
Highly recommended.

Great for heavy laptop

When I purchased my laptop I wanted to make sure to get a decent sized screen and FULL keyboard (complete with the number panel). What I didn't predict was how heavy those options are. Carrying my laptop in a single strap laptop tote is heavy and get painful when traveling through airports.

This backpack was just the ticket. Spreading the weight to both shoulders made travelling much more comfortable. My laptop is still heavy and it's not perfect. But it's much better.

Great, if caught at a bargain.

This backpack is surprisingly well padded.It's padded in every direction of not just the laptop compartment,but for the middle pocket in the front as well which was a nice touch. I purchased this backpack for just $10,so I recommend waiting for this bag to be under $15 before buying it since the prices fluctuate often for this specific bag. The straps for the bag itself are very comfortable after having worn classic Jansport backpacks my entire life. Purchasing this bag when it was $10, it's easily a 5-star in my opinion, except for the fact that there's NO WATERBOTTLE HOLDER, but I was already aware of that before purchasing. Feel free to comment on this post if anyone has any questions on this bag.

You would think the strap on the top would hit ...

You would think the strap on the top would hit your neck and bother you but it really doesn't.
Pros: Slim but still enough room.
