A New, Capable, and Cost-Effective Laptop

This laptop doesn't have the highest specs out there, but for the price it's quite capable and well worth it for my needs.

The laptop has a very new (as of writing this) processor from Intel that's fairly powerful, but also energy efficient. Built in with this processor you get Intel HD Graphics 5500 for moderate gaming performance and rendering needs. Though you're definitely not going to be able to play the newest graphically demanding games on the highest settings and get decent frame rates, most games that aren't as demanding or are a few years old or more should run fairly well.

Of the 8GB of RAM that this laptop comes with, it looks like 4 of it is soldered on the main board, so the ability to upgrade the RAM is limited more than I would prefer. On the other hand, 8GB is a nice amount that should be more than enough for most people's needs.

The 1TB HDD has a pretty large capacity for a laptop, and likewise should be more than enough for most people. However, I much prefer SSDs for their speed, but especially in laptops because they have no moving parts that might be damaged if the laptop gets jostled around a bit. I plan to upgrade my laptop with a Samsung 850 EVO, and though I haven't settled on a capacity yet, it will likely be the 1TB one. (I should mention that to replace the HDD in this laptop does require quite a bit of work and caution, especially when separating and lifting off the keyboard half so that the sides aren't damaged and so that the connecting cable between the main board and the keyboard doesn't rip off. Doing this will likely void your warranty as well. I recommend that most people don't attempt it, because they will more than likely damage the laptop.Read more ›

Main takeaway: I'm very pleased with the purchase overall and highly recommend it to anyone who needs a laptop for everyday usage. Remember especially that many people over-buy or get talked into things they don't need. The i3 in this system is more than capable of performing the majority of tasks most users will require of it. Gamers who need a video card capable of running the latest and greatest new releases will need to look elsewhere, but this laptop should be fine for anyone who will be mostly surfing the internet, watching streaming videos, listening to music, writing emails, working with word processing, etc.

Remember that buying it with certain credit cards (American Express, Visa Signature, others?) will automatically double the manufacturer's 12 month warranty.

Pros:

- At $350 shipped, it's essentially a $300 laptop with specs appropriate to the price and a $50 full-HD 1080p screen. Maybe the market is moving to HD at this price point, but I doubt there are many systems out there with these specs/screen at this price. I was considering a Chromebook or the like, but for $100 (or less) I got a fully functional PC with a full HD screen. Wow.

- Battery life after unpacking and charging overnight shows 4.5 hours on the battery saver setting. I suspect 3-4 hours is probably realistic once it's being used.

- The screen looks great with a bit of light bleeding on the bottom edge of mine. It's only noticeable in a dark room while watching a dark movie, so I'm possibly being overly critical. Again, $350, and wow. The viewing angles are okay but I'm sure they'd look horrible if placed next to a $2000 laptop.

Doesn't attract cats.

This laptop is almost perfect for me, and here's why. First, it's extremely quick and responsive online. You may be thinking "hey random guy, I have a smartphone, so why should I care?" Well, if you've never had ice cream, you won't know why you should care about that either. This is the ice cream of internet browsing. There's even chocolate on it, but that didn't come with the laptop. That was separate, and I'm still a bit mad at my cat because of it. Second, music. When you have a couple hundred CDs, it takes a long time to rip them to MP3. I'd understand if the laptop got bored during this chore, but not once did it complain. It just chugged along and now my music is ready to listen to. Contrast this with my old smartphone that decided it didn't want to charge anymore, so I had no way to transfer my music collection to anything else. And quality? Well, it's not bad at all for a laptop. It's not studio quality, but you weren't expecting that either. Third, cooling. Some laptops get really hot. This one doesn't. If you want proof, the fact that I'm typing on the keyboard should do the trick. A lot of laptops get really hot. When this happens, cats will come an sit on the keyboard. You don't even have to have cats. They just materialize on your keyboard. Here I am typing on it, though, so point ASUS. Fourth, Minecraft. Everyone wants to play Minecraft. This does it well, even with the 32 bit Ozocraft texture pack. So that's good. I did take off one star though because I think that the DVD drive button is a little unresponsive. Not a huge deal, but when you're ripping CDs it get's a bit annoying. Not as annoying as realizing I still had a Lincoln Park CD in my collection from 14 years ago, but still annoying.
