A good balance between price, performance, and portability

There's not a lot of choice if you're looking for a 14" or smaller laptop with a quad-core i7 and a powerful discrete graphics card. In this class the two options are basically the Gigabyte P34W and the Razer Blade. In theory, the Aorus X3v4 is an equivalent option but it doesn't seem to be widely available. The P34W machine is the most affordable of the three, and (I believe) the only one on which RAM and hard drive are easily user upgradeable. The main update of v4 vs v3 is the inclusion of a Broadwell i7-5700HQ CPU vs the previous i7-4720HQ. Gigabyte has already announced that there will be a Skylake version of the P34W, though I would guess that won't be available for another couple of months.

As of this review, I've had the machine in hand for about a week. I've swapped out the mSATA and hard drive for larger/faster drives and (re)installed Windows 8.1 and Linux Mint 17.2. I've done some modest gaming on it (Civ 5), but haven't had a chance to do serious numerical computing yet (my justification for purchasing it!). Here are my observations so far.

Pros:
* Excellent performance
* Nice bright screen
* Lightweight and compact (but see below re: power supply)
* Easy to upgrade RAM
* mSATA and hard drive replacement are slightly more involved but still straight forward to swap out
* In power-saving/silent mode it's pretty much absolutely silent, thought the fan does occasionally whir up a little bit.
* FHD screen for native resolution gaming
* Linux Mint 17.2 runs without a hitch -- WLAN, Bluetooth, Video Drivers, Function keys, etc. all recognized out of the box.

Cons:
* Screen contrast could be a notch higher

This laptop is a marvel of engineering. Play any current games at max graphic settings. I played WoW for 30min, and still had 2.5 hours of battery life remaining for regular surfing when I was done.

Only caveat is the fans can get loud under heavy load. I suspect this is true of any gaming laptop, especially one that is only 3/4" thick. The fans exhaust out the back, so that helps a little. Overall solution... wear headphones.

1080p display is razor sharp. It's not a glossy display, so it can actually be used outdoors, without your reflection being brighter than the screen content. Not in direct sunlight, obviously. I used it on an outdoor covered patio, and was able to read it pretty well.

Unit ships with one 8gb memory dimm. You can add another.

Normal office apps and work are blazing fast as well.

I've only had it a week, so I can't comment on longevity, but overall construction feels solid.

I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a portable gaming rig, or just an extremely powerful work laptop.

XOTICPC is a fantastic company to work with

This laptop far exceeded my expectations. First of all, XOTICPC is a fantastic company to work with. Before I even received my package, they emailed me personally to make sure everything was going smoothly and wanted to inform me of when to expect my package and who to contact regarding any questions I had.

When I received the laptop (P34W V4), I booted it up, installed Windows 10 and began loading the thing up with stuff from my Steam library. I have to say, I haven't had a PC, let alone laptop run this smoothly...ever. My average boot time is 4.6 seconds from a cold boot, the machine is highly customizable in terms of settings and updates through Gigabytes proprietary software and the GTX 970m is blazing fast. I haven't been able to find something that it can't handle.

I know there is a lot I haven't talked about, but take it from someone who hardly writes reviews to begin with, this product and company are of high caliber. I will be going back to XOTICPC for any future purchases. HIGHLY recommended!

great laptop so far

great laptop so far. windows 10 installed myself and drivers worked without any problems. i have yet to use the laptop to it's potential, but i can tell it's fast and awesome.

i bought the Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB Single DDR3 1866 MT/s (PC3-12800) SODIMM as suggested from an earlier review. it installed fine. there's a wire a bit in the way when installing the second stick of ram, i just pushed the stick down.... hopefully there's no issues in the future. i couldn't think of a good way to push that wire up around the ram stick.
