Good drive, great deal, but still get the 2 year protection plan!

Was actually a Hitachi drive, not totally generic. I imagine they just have assorted name brand drives, and call them "generic" because you never know what brand you were going to get. I have been using it about 3 weeks now under heavy load and have had no problems (Downloaded 100+GB of games for the PS3 and have been playing solely off the HDD).

I always suggest the 2 year protection. With mechanical HDDs it's not "if" it will break down, its "when" it will break down. HDD's are like cars, as the milage racks up, breakdowns become imminent. They can be damaged in such a way that it is not entirely evident up front, but gets progressively worse over time causing premature failure. This type of thing can happen if the drive is dropped in shipping, or your computer/console gets a moderate to heavy impact while the drive is running.

Very quiet and fast, Works as if it's not even there. I definately recommend for anyone who needs a HDD. Also would recommend a 2.5" PS3 caddy if you dont already have one, Most 12GB PS3 models do not come shipped with one.

Was doubtful at first...

I got this hard drive on Monday. So far almost a week in and everything works just fine. I followed the process of switching out your HDD for your PS3 and placed my 500GB HDD inside the system. The drive worked great and the 4.66 update was installed. once I restored my console I checked my system information and there it was. The amount of free space of GB was updated. Then after that came the tedious task of reinstalling EVERYTHING onto this new HDD. Everything from my flash drive where my game saves were stored, to all my purchases on the PSN store and installing all the game data from my games. Having to do that with gta 5 again was annoying ha. I should also mention the the drive runs smoothly. My PS3 purrs and runs great. What I thought was weird was that in the description it said "2.5 SATA" but when I looked at it and read the info on the HDD it said "3.0 SATA" but still had the 500 GB. Still it works with my PS3. I had my doubts about this drive at first just because its generic but hey it works fine and I feel so much better knowing that I have ALOT of free space now on my PS3.

Great Hard drive!

I used this hard drive to upgrade my 80gig ps3 fat version to a 500gig and it fit perfectly. Although the drive ended up being 465gig that was well more than enough for my gaming needs and runs great. I highly recommend for a gamer like me that's trying to upgrade their ps3 fat version at a cheap cost.

Damaged in 3 months.

I bought this thinking it was a good deal since it was for my father. The laptop I bought him for father's day a few years ago finally went out. The hard drive was done so since he only uses it for browsing the web and YouTube, I bought him this thinking it was a great deal. Well the price is awesome, but the product not so much. I currently have 3 PCs right now, 2 laptops and a 1 desktop. My computers are usually on 24/7 from they day they are bought and I have had my shares of hard drive failures from excessive use for years and years. One of my laptop needed a new hard drive after 4 years of constant use. I took it out of my 2 year old i7 and replace that with a faster 7200rpm WD Black Series. Impress by the hard drive lasting 4 years with the abuse I put it through.

Since my old man is a light user, this hard drive was a deal when I bought it (120 GB $23 at the time of purchase w/ a 1 year warranty). Well that's not the case with the "generic" hard drive at all. 3 months went by and it is dead. I contacted Amazon and ask for a new one since it has a 1 year warranty and they told me to send it in. I sent it in and waited... and waited... 4 weeks later I get an email saying that they issued me a refund. I clearly didn't want a refund, but received one anyway. They also charged me a restocking fee. A restocking fee for a product that broke in three months with a 1 year warranty. Very disappointed with the time it took to find out what was going on and also getting a refund when I wanted a new one.

If you are going to store important things on a hard drive, you might as well get something more reliable. You can actually find brand name hard drives with a better reliability for about the same. I had to buy another one and it's a Hitachi 160 GB $28.Read more ›

If in need of space on PS3, buy this.

At first I was skeptical because I saw the word "Generic" thinking it was not going to be a good quality hard drive but the seller had the description "Will send Western Digital or Seagate drive". My friend told me those were good brands so that was a little reassuring. I though about it and I took a chance and bought one and sure enough, got a good quality Seagate hard drive at a great price. Well, considering how high the ratings are you might as well purchase one if you are in need of more space. I bought a 500GB HDD to replace the factory 80GB I've been using ever since I bought my PS3. The hard drive works great and now I can install all my games and DLC content onto my PS3 as well as all the anime and movies I've downloaded too. Replacing the drive is very easy but waiting for games to re-install/update is the hard thing to do. After swapping drives, it showed 412GB / 465GB. Now I'm glad I can finally play GT6 and GTA V since those games takes up a lot of space.
