An excellent tool for keeping doors propped open

I won one of these at a school raffle. I thought I would use it as a kids laptop - all it would need to do is run Minecraft and a few other basic games, access some kid web sites and run a word processor. I am happy to report you can run a word processor.

Okay you can access kid web sites. Or you can run a high-end internet security suite with parental controls turned on. But I haven't had much success doing both. Though perhaps the long "staring at the screen waiting for it to load" experience could teach my kids what the internet was like back when it was delivered via a 28k modem... If you don't have kids, and can settle for a little less "internet security" armor turned on, this is fine for web browsing. But as soon as that virus scanner kicks in, it's time to go get a cup of coffee.

Games. Forget it. After some tweaking I got Minecraft to run at pretty much the lowest settings possible. The frame rate was in the low 20's. Minecraft on "high" settings doesn't look that great. On low settings it's pretty much pointless. So having determined it wasn't going to work for kids, I looked around at some old games I had sitting around to see what would run on it. If there is one good thing I can say is that this has a CD/DVD drive, which is being less common at this price. You are going to need it to search out a game that will run on this laptop, because the first game I could get to run at passable settings was a five year old game called "Risen", which was only playable at low settings.

So that made me curious, what is wrong with this laptop? I did a little research and found out the basic problem is the CPU: AMD E1-2100. This is a combined CPU/Grapics chip.Read more ›

This laptop is very slow, the processor it comes with is as slow as an old-time-computer.

save yourself 30 bucks and get the Acer laptop, almost same specs but with better processor, note be taken, it has no optical drive

Do not waste your time and money

Do not waste your time and money. This is probably the worst computer ever with the worst processor ever. It would load up amazon in a html format. Worst part is, 3 days after I bought one, the wireless connection gave out in it and I had to call tech support. WORST 4 HOURS OF MY LIFE! Spend an extra hundred or so

I'll never buy a laptop off Amazon again, this is the worst new computer I have ever purchased and it failing me in the beginning of my semester is a slap in the face. It will barely even start and takes forever to load, to put it lightly this thing is a piece of trash

Good for everyday tasks and entertainment

Considering the price I find this laptop to be quite well made. The battery life averages around 4 1/2 hours and the screen is beautiful. It also is very light and doesn't overheat which was a serious issue with my previous laptop. However the only thing I can complain about is the processor not being the fastest. It gets the job done normally with simple web browsing and even holds up when I watch Netflix or HD movies, but when it comes to cpu intensive games there's going to be a lot of lag. Other than that, if your looking for a good day to day laptop with a really nice screen for entertainment, I would recommend it.

Good for a backup.

So I'll try to make this review logical and in order:

I purchased this laptop as a quick replacement when my main laptop suffered graphics card failure. My old laptop was an ASUS AMD A8 Quad Core. Obviously I didn't expect this laptop to compete with that.

First: The Operating System (OS) is Windows 8.1 which is useful for productivity purposes. Other than having to transfer (or buy) Microsoft Office etc. I generally love AMD and prefer them over Intel. In this case not so much. The laptop is extremely slow out of the box. No joke it reminded me of going back to the dial-up age and waiting for a connection on AOL (The processor is 1.0GHz). I was so frustrated (and I'm relatively patient) that I actually shut the laptop off and ordered a RAM upgrade hoping to alleviate the problem. 8GB has increased the speed significantly to a degree. If you open to many windows or projects (in my experience 4-5) you might as well go make some tea and read a book waiting for a response.

Second: Being a student and needing a laptop it can be incredibly frustrating waiting 10 minutes for a page to load (or who knows what). I will tell you right off the bat Google Chrome absolutely detests this laptop. I have always preferred Chrome and have never ever had any problems with it. In fact I've always switched to Chrome to improve browsing speeds. The opposite is true with this laptop. Using Chrome was so frustrating, that I switched to Firefox. If you keep up with the news Firefox and Google hate each other. You generally have problems loading Gmail and other Google features in Firefox (except YouTube for some reason). That means I have to set aside 15 minutes to open Chrome so I can load Gmail.

Third: It's not all bad. The laptop is slim, light, and easy to carry etc.Read more ›
