great laptop

I bought this and it works well.i took win 8 off and currently have linux running,plan to install Vista as a dual boot. Some manufacturer's are making win 8 laptops so they don't allow a user to uninstall win 8 including Asus and acer/gateway.and I wasn't upset that it had no optical drive,even though more and more software is available through download still many people resist.i find it annoying having to keep disks aroundmi have steam and all I do is pop in a password and my screenname and boomni can download steam games anywhere.
As for the performance,the laptop does well for most users. The processor is a low wattage processor and isn't as powerful or fast as the average processor but the low end processes are much better than the ones of even two years ago. Also.much of the hp drivers hindered performance so I would take them off(such as hp power,which was annoying because the default windows power settings are just fine and allow for more user input). So taking thise off will help improve performance.i also out of habit don't run 50 programs at once so that may be another factor of why performance is so much better for me. I usually run two or three but I have had a bunch of Internet windows open and it ran just fine.i also like the fact that this has 3 usb ports,not one or two as many cheap models have now.the screen is nice and so is the shell case.ironically the outside is nicer than the inside of the case as the inside will show any sign of touching the surface.so they should have made the outside and inside look the same.

No optical drive

I wanted to buy a laptop for my daughter's birthday. Nothing too expensive, but enough to do schoolwork, play games, surf the web, etc.

I researched many, and decided on this one, mainly because of the $250 price tag.

For the price, this laptop is a great deal. That is, if it included the advertised optical drive.

Before you argue, the pictures show it, and the spec sheet used to show it as a CD/DVD combo drive.

Without the optical drive, the price is not as good. Luckily, Amazon has good customer service and refunded me $50, which is more than enough to purchase an internal drive. I called HP and was told by the tech that they would send me a drive free of charge. He took my information and passed me along to his supervisor who would approve the order. The supervisor was willing, but couldn't find a model number for the drive. He sent my case higher up and told me to expect a call back the next morning. I received a callback from an extremely rude lady that said it's Amazon's fault and they wouldn't help me. I said that's fine, just let me know the specs of the drive so I can purchase one. She refused, and I hung up, eventually settling for an external drive.

For $275, which includes this laptop plus a decent external drive, the price is no longer worth it, especially when the Wal-Mart version of this laptop has an internal drive and HD webcam for $295. But for my cost of $225 total, it will work.

The good news: There is a slot for a SATA drive, and installation is as simple as removing a single screw. If anyone has any luck finding an internal drive, please comment on my review with the model to help others out.

Minus one star for the exclusion of an optical drive at the price point this laptop is at, and another for the rudeness of the HP rep.

It plugs into you computer through USB.

I'm only looking for basic laptop where I can surf the web, check my email, go to you tube and watch video. manage my fantasy sport. all and all l'm happy with purchase.

update: been one week and it's running smoothly. not bad for sub $ 275 laptop. a lot of memory ( 500GB, more than I ever need. I DO NOT download music or video ) it looks simple, not too flashy. I don't like flashy stuffs ( don't want people trying to steal it:) ) NO DVD/CD player?? yes, but people still watch DVD contents?? ever heard of Blue Ray??:) if this laptop have Blue Ray player, man i'll be ecstatic then it WILL NOT be less than $ 275, more like $ 500. it's alright I've my regular BR player playing on my 55 inches HDTV. better that way!! don't like to watch movies on my laptop, youtube video is all I ever watch any kind of video.

Not a fast computer. Not bad for a non-power user like me. I only use mine for email, shopping, social media, word processing. I dislike Windows 8. Can't wait for Windows 10 upgrade, which will be free for me when I bought this PC. Very slow in booting up until I deleted MacAfee and other "non-essential" programs I wouldn't use. ie. games. I installed free AVG security and that's working well. I like that it has 3 USB ports, HDMI port, and an SD card port. I wanted to spend as little money as possible on a PC and I got exactly what I paid for. So I don't mean to be harsh in my rating. This is meant to be informative so you know you are not getting a great computer for this low price. The price is equivalent to the quality and speed of this PC.
