While I am more technically skilled than most, I am hardly a "techie" so this review is not about running speed benchmarks or analyzing screen resolution. It is for the average user.
Having said that, I am very impressed with this laptop. My three-year-old 13" Toshiba is on its last legs and this is its replacement. To begin with, the increase in screen size is amazing. For only a slight increase in weight - 3.5 to 5 pounds - there is an incredible difference in screen size and quality. While I am not a gamer, clarity, resolution and overall graphics quality exceeded my expectations. I do nearly all of my TV and video watching online so this has made a huge difference to me.
While it was not originally a "must have" for me, the touchscreen is very responsive and now something I depend on and would find hard to do without.
My Toshiba - an $800 Walt Mossberg recommendation - served me well but the build quality suffered a bit in an effort to keep the overall weight to a minimum. Not so with this HP. This feels sturdier and more able to hold up over time (but it is still only a few months old so who knows).
I work in the media and rely on a few basic programs - Adobe Photoshop, Office and whatever video editing software I happen to be using. This computer handles all of those programs well and switches easily between them.
Webcam and microphone work well and have handled Nuance Naturally Speaking 13 voice recognition without any problems.
My one complaint is related to Microsoft - every default is set to push the user into using MS cloud services so take your time during the initial set up to be sure your data is stored where you want.
The computer itself boots up quickly and battery life hovers just over four hours for me.

I would only give it a lower rating because I am not a fan of Windows 8/8.1. However that has nothing to do with the computer from HP itself. Quick, responsive, it does what I wanted it for, a device to edit photos on the go as I am a professional photographer. Can't go wrong for the price.

The computer is great but Windows 8 is a curse upon us. I knew I had to get it with a new computer in case I get a chance to go back to work, but I am sorry Microsoft is imposing it upon us. One is operating in a totally new visual paradigm. It will take a Long time to get up to speed on it without any benefits in the short or long term. They are making the screen like a tablet one carries around but no one carries around a laptop like a tablet or smart phone. Laptops are workhorses one needs to be simple to get complicated work done--reports, letters, spreadsheets, whatever. Tablets and smart phones are to carry around to surf the net, send messages.

This is a great computer for surfing the internet, watching movies, streaming TV/Netflix and doing normal house computer tasks like tracking bills and writing resumes. The touch screen is easy to operate and responds well. The mouse does go a little haywire from time to time but it comes back if I use the touch screen for a few "clicks." The computer is light weight, it has the vents on the side and bottom but hasn't bee hot on my legs while using it. All-in-all it's a great home computer. I recommend it.

So I decided to write this review after using it a while to see how we like it. I got it to replace our 8 yr old Dell laptop that basically died. This is primarily used by our 4 kids since we have a regular desktop too that my husband uses for work and doesn't want the kids to ruin. We wanted something cheaper, but still powerful enough for games (though we're not heavy gamers). And the kids wanted a touchscreen. This fit the bill. It has large memory and can burn CDs & DVDs and has an HDMI port which my younger son loves so he can play games using the TV screen.

The computer works really great overall, but it does have some issues with wifi or the browser. Sometimes the wifi disappears briefly, but then comes back on. Don't know why it does that since it sits in the same place. Also, sometimes the browser just gets stuck -- the window turns black and nothing can be accessed on that page and the browser has to be started again. It happens even when wifi has all bars. We use Firefox and it never happens on our desktop, so it's just a problem on this computer. But it's a rare occurance, so not a big deal.

This is our first usage of Windows 8 (actually 8.1) and I find it annoying but the kids like it. They're each a user and have their own start screens and each one customized their screens and backgrounds. So that was fun for them. I find this version of Windows really annoying because of the apps, which are really games. Older Windows had normal games (like solitaire) that don't require internet and can be played by any user. This Windows has apps that require internet to play and can only be used by one user. If another person wants that game, they have to install it in their account too. This is silly since it just eats up the computer's memory.

Amazon price is not the best out there, got mine from Staples for $299. Laptop does perfectly what it supposed to do in this basic configuration and it runs much smoother if McAfee is uninstalled. Windows Apps are buggy so I'm using browser mostly. For instance, Youtube apps are horrible but there are no issues when watching videos in Chrome or Firefox. Overall the machine is great, my last HP laptop died after 6 years only because my 3 year old daughter knocked it over the kitchen counter twice (over the period of 6 month). The the second drop killed the hard drive and that was a good excuse to get me a new laptop :) .
