99% of my online purchases are from Amazon, so I obviously love shopping here, but I bought this computer from Newegg for $399.99. No tax and free shipping.

I build, repair and maintain computer for a living.

This laptop is what HP calls a "Commercial" computer rather than a "Consumer" computer.
The two main differences from an HP "Consumer" computer is that this computer comes with Windows 7 Professional Edition (rather then Windows 7 Home Premium). It also comes with a Windows 8.1 Profession Edition disk. (I prefer Windows 7)

The other IMPORTANT difference, is that this computer comes with a Hitachi 7200 RPM Hard Drive. The Hard Drives on HP "Consumer" computers are 5400 RPM (slower) and have a HIGH failure rate.

Many of my customers are annoyed with me for recommending HP consumer grade computers in the past because of the high failure rate of the Hard Drives. So, I now only recommend a "Commercial" grade HP computer or computer made by other manufacturers.

This particular laptop is GREAT for the $400 I paid for it.

There are two USB 3 ports on the LEFT side of the computer and one USB 2 port on the right,.
FYI not all USB 3 ports are blue in color. On this computer, the USB ports are the same black color as USB 2, but if you look closely, you will see that it has the typical USB icon etched into the plastic with the letters 'SS" before the icon. (That stands for SuperSpeed) which designates that it is USB 3. I tested both sides and yes, the speed is incredibly faster compared to USB 2. So remember to use the USB ports on the left if you are transferring huge amounts of data from an external Hard Drive for instance.

I purchased this machine after doing a bit of research and pricing similar units from Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba and landed on this one. At this price range, most of these machines are about the same, so I took a chance and went with the HP because I saw reviews on PC World and other sites about these machines.

What I needed: The most important part of buying this was what I needed it for. It's a machine for my wife, who will use the internet, email, Skype, Word, and occasionally Netflix for the kids. She didn't need a high end gaming rig with a quad core processor and nVidia graphics and all that. So, with that in mind, here's what I think of the machine so far:

Right out of the box, it's nice and light and thin. My wife walks to work, and had a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6930 which was about 2 times as heavy. This one is lightweight and thin and sleek which makes it easier to travel with (walk especially). Mild concern here.... The thin construction makes me worry that it won't withstand bumps and dings easily. My wife uses a laptop daily and travels back and forth with it. With that and 2 kids, I worry the delicate construction might be a problem down the road. The Toshiba was a tank, and heavy to boot. This is definitely much more frail.

Initial setup: I took it out of the box, attached the battery (very thin bar and not huge and bulky) and fired it up. It started quickly and loaded Windows pretty fast. First thing I did was remove McAfee. (* Microsoft... please stop *) I cannot stand a lot of these pre-loaded programs that are being put on machines these days.

On the good side, this laptop didn't have a lot of garbage programs.

Got it and couldn't get hardly any bandwidth on wifi. Tried many things. Turns out there is a known problem with the Bluetooth. Turn off Bluetooth and the wifi bandwidth speed shoots up to max, turn Bluetooth back on, and get maybe 2-3mbps. Called HP, they didn't have a solution and after going through multiple tiers of support, they quit calling me back. Decided to just send it back and get something that works.

Same problem as others....no bandwidth with Bluetooth running. Right out of the box I couldn't get any download speed...took 2 hours to download Chrome, over an hour to load virus definitions from AVG, couldn't download video files, couldn't stream videos..... TURN OFF BLUETOOTH

Other than that, I like it. It looks good, is pretty sleek, fairly light, good display, nice keyboard, DVD player, battery life seems ok, pretty sturdy....

Like the multiple ports.

Good value at $400

I ordered this item and had some apprehensions about what I was going to receive based on reviews. I expected problems with the WiFi and was not surprised when it failed to achieve any downloadable speed. It was slow, really slow! I wasted several hours trying to download the recommended drivers through a wireless connection. Ethernet to the rescue! Didn't know why I didn't think of it sooner. Success!! Downloaded all the recommended drivers and then some. There was even a BIOS update . After restarts I had a useable Win 7 computer. If you have the patience it pays off. Do not expect perfection out of the box. Pros: A good value with decent performance at a refurbished price. Makes a great utility computer prefect for my intended use with a Ham Radio Station. I needed a basic Win 7 machine after my old one died. Depending on the vender, you may get a surprise. After a couple hours I noticed that I had an optical drive! Didn't expect that! I now have to return the one I bought while waiting for this products arrival. Cons: Has to be updated with the Win 7 drivers before it is useable. Produce came with no software keys! No sticker on the machine or included with the win 8.1 disc. I checked and I do have valid software . This products' warranty was activated in Nov 2014. I now have to call HP to see if I can get it extended. In conclusion, I am very pleased with my purchase. It's a great value and I would buy it again. I rate this 4 out of 5 stars. Do your research on this product and take time to set it up.
