Nice unit. Solid and steady. Just what this media type needs...

I spend at least a third of my year travelling. I'm also a busy industry commentator who writes words for a living. I need two things - reliability and battery life. I'm given hardware to test on a very regular basis, I've gone through half a dozen different laptops/ultrabooks in the past few years.

This is one unit that has stuck - it's sufficiently pretty (without being too flash), has a solid feel to it (lots of metal rather than plastic) and has a great battery life. The backlit keyboard and non-glare screen are super important to me.

Of course there are a few things I'd do differently - I'd much rather that the machine came without all the add-on software on it (truth is, people hardly use that stuff). I also downgraded (though I'd say upgrade) to Windows 7 from Windows 8.

I've had this unit now for a year or so and am really happy with it - more speed would always be nice but for now this will do me fine!

Great ultrabook!

The HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 is a class leading ultrabook. It certainly doesn't come inexpensively, but it is hard to argue with its performance. The build quality is exceptional as with all HP Elite series products. The model I have isn't the exact same spec as the one shown here, mine is an Intel Haswell i5 4300U with a 256gb SSD, 1080p display and 8gb of ram.

The performance from this notebook is second to none and includes both Windows 7 and 8.1. I installed 8.1 Pro for the increased performance especially upon boot up. In less than a half minute you are up and running. It is also amazingly thin, less than the thickness of a dime standing up in fact.

Running Office 2013 and Adobe Elements 13 is a breeze. The display is sharp and I lIke the fact it is non-glossy. The blowout price I got from HP direct was roughly $1,100 which was hundreds less than a comparable Surface Pro plus it has a real keyboard which is far better than any keyboard you can get for a Surface Pro.

If you are in need of a powerful Windows device that is ultra portable bringing together the portability of iPad and power of a PC with a full keyboard, look no further than the HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1.

Laptop is solidly built, and running Windows 7, it is a perfect machine for my high school son who takes his laptop to school in his backpack. The lightweight and long battery life are what drew us to this laptop.
Screen is excellent. Keyboard is excellent. Trackpad is excellent. Fit and finish are excellent. Very lightweight. Solid feel. Battery life seems good so far.
My son got a Razr Bluetooth mouse so no USB plug in needed.

Only thing that I would have changed would be to include a SD card to be able to read directly from our camera card. The SD format is pretty standard, and I can't imagine that it would take up that much space.

Charger died in about 2 weeks - there was an HP recall about that.

Overall, excellent machine. Would buy again. Worth the higher cost. Good job HP.

Great notebook, very nice design

I thought that I already posted one review. Great notebook, very nice design, quite sturdy too. Screen is not retina quality but it is still very clear and has quite vivid colors. Like Windows 7, although it has some features of windows 8 (like having a short cuts to facebook, twitter etc, to may of social media which are of no interest to someone using the laptop for business).
