The HP Envy line with i7 quad core processors has some serious issues. Most people are fine with the laptop within the first few months of purchase, but between that time and the next year is when some serious issues come up. The main problem is that this laptop has a design flaw and if you use it for graphics intense activities, it may very well overheat and cause hardware issues. You won't find any of those reviews here, but if you take a quick search at the HP support forums you'll find that there are multiple complaints about the HP Envy 15/17/dv6/dv7 and HP Pavilion dv6/dv7 in regards to overheating, customer service response/issues, and ultimately hardware issues/failures: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Gaming-Reply-Only/Envy-17-overheating-is-bothering-me/td-p/334600/page/21

Now I'm not saying that you'll definitely end up with a flawed product, but I am saying that there is a small chance that you will and that it will be a serious headache and waste of time and money trying to fix. Ultimately, I would advise you to go visit HP Support Forums and view for yourself the complaints of users who have had this notebook for an extended period of time.

Bottom line - Great specs, but terrible design flaw that may cause your device to overheat (potentially burning you) and then leading to a failing motherboard, making this device serve as nothing more than an expensive doorstop.

First of all, I did not buy this from Amazon but I do feel my experience may help others so I am posting comments here. The unit has a nice overall appearance and the 15.6 inch screen has great appeal and very clear HD graphics. However, the model would not charge and died within a couple of days, even with the power source adapter plugged in 24 hours. When I called HP tech support, there were two choices to select on the phone - press 1 for having trouble with the AC adapter or press 2 if you have trouble with the laptop starting up. Both of these scenarios seemed to be what my laptop was having issues with and I am sure I am not the only one. These inherent flaws for these laptops were so prevalent that HP had two lines open for this exact issue - not a good thing for consumer to be greeted with. Eventually, after much trouble shooting and a few hours waste of time, the issue was escalated to a "claims manager". I looked at the installed programs and there was lots of bloatware and junk on it. After experimenting, HP said to return the item for repair. I asked them to delete my personal files which had been on there and which I could not uninstall because the system had died before I could even take any files off. HP said they would have it back in a week but it wasn't back to me for two weeks. They promised it would be working in perfect order and that some of the other issues like a faulty DVD player, along with the start up issues would be resolved. The repair was supposed to be on the system board. When I got it back, it had 58 installed progams on it and some were viruses. It took three more hours with an HP technician to uninstall the junk that was on it. within two days, the exact same thing which occured the first time happened.Read more ›

First, I order this laptop to do some high performance college programming but till now I did not run such program yet. I like the charging time when it is working on just the battery. Sometime I do not like the feeling of the kaypad but I will use to use it. I Like the fans power when it is trying to cool the CPU even sometime I heard the sound of the fans. I will update the power of the eight cores when I will run my program. I like also the fingerprint option to log in to my accounts and my favorite websites like Ebay and Amazon.
What I do not like is that I heard SOMETIME some sounds from the hard drive but after some days I used to hear it.

The screen colors are crisp and the image resolution is neat, Windows 8 was not difficult to get used to, in fact, now I get confused when using Windows 7 on other computers. Boot time is really fast, around 15 secs. It's very light. Battery runs for about 3 hours with light work (just surfing the web) which I think is kind of a short time. As other reviewer said, it gets a little bit warm, nothing too important. The only thing that detracts me from giving it 5 stars is that it kind of feels flimsy, my old Dell Inspiron 1525 feels better built. I have yet to run new games to talk about performance, but playing The Sims 3 on high resolution didn't have a problem. Overall, a good buy.

The screen is garbage. Despite it have an upgraded screen, the viewing angles are awful. If you are outside of the maybe 1deg wide sweet spot for tilt, your colors are either darkened, or washed out. Looking straight on the screen the colors are very washed out. Internet searching reveled that HP used a very cheap TN display for these, as opposed to most other companies that use a different type of display that was much wider, much better viewing angles. Some higher end HP laptops have the better displays, but this one doesn't. I wouldn't expect this economical model to have the same high quality screen as the z-book, but it should be better than this for sure, especially considering that other manufacturers have much better screen that don't have this problem. See my picture of the same photo on each screen at the normal viewing angle (the z-book is back-lilt, hence the slight wash-out in the upper left).

If you want to look at pictures (let alone edit them) or watch movies on your laptop, then this model will disappoint you severely. It's not a quality control thing, or a "certain percentage are bad" thing, every one of these laptops will have these washed out colors.
