Disappointed in screen and sound quality

I bought this lap top on November 21, 2014 because I liked all the configuration, especially quad core processor and nand flash storage for faster start up, I was actually looking for best option for my money and I was thinking this will be an upgrade for HP ENVY M7 K111DX which is sold by best buy only (bought it couple days earlier). Both lap tops are similar but man I was disappointed with 17-J140us.
When you compare those two side by side there is a huge difference in quality of display, j140us displays only 1600x900 resolution which results in a really bad screen quality, colors seems washed out, picture quality is so much better at k111dx that almost blind person can see. Nothing of what is written in description:
'an ultra vivid, large Full HD display, see every detail down to the last pixel'
Then J140us supposed to have 'Beats Audio quad speakers and two subwoofers' but sound coming out of these speakers is so poor and nothing comparing to sound of speakers from k111dx from best buy.
I was so looking forward to this lap top but I was so disappointed. Having a great display and great sound is worth to me much more then quad processor (they are both I7,very fast, only k111dx has 2core processor) and 2 seconds faster start.
I'm returning j140us and M7 k111dx is my best choice for money spent.

Great Purchase and very happy

I purchased this laptop on January 6th and aside from one problem I have to say I'm very happy. The problem I encountered was that when you closed the lid and put the laptop to sleep the WI-FI when you opened the lid was disabled. I posted a question whether or not anyone else had encountered this issue and the answer was none. I tried deleting the driver and reinstalling and it only lasted a day or two. I eventually went to the Intel sight and there I found a driver update for this machine one for Wi-FI and the other for Bluetooth. The link for Wi-Fi is as follows:

Since installing the updated driver I have not experienced the issue again my problem may have been since I’m running a 100MB connection. This is not unusual so I can’t blame HP although their site for downloads doesn’t have this update available. I have to admit that I’m a retired IT executive and that this is one of the best laptops I have encountered in my research for a state-of-the-art machine. I have to say that the touch pad is ultra sensitive and takes quite a bit of getting used to and I have found that the extreme right and left corners perform the functions that one expects out of their mouse. Just be patient and you will find that you will adjust to the touch pad.
This laptop has more than enough power, the keyboard as others have indicated is easy raised keyboard (plus backlit when/if you want it by pressing the F5 key without using the function key), graphics are great. The boot time is fantastic as reported, and the loading of applications is very fast. I have added my Windows8.1 Pro license software on this machine and couldn’t be happier.Read more ›

Fast! Lots of memory and HD space

24 hours and I'm very happy. I had purchased 3 others in the past 6 months and had returned them for one reason or another - this one is a keeper so far.

Enough power, easy raised keyboard (plus backlit when/if you want it), graphics are great. The boot time is fantastic. Loading applications and using them is very fast.

There are enough applications loaded out of the box to get you where you want to go but not too many (like a box stores load).

Windows 8 is what it is but HP has given enough options to where you can use the desktop on boot without having to search the web for boot options and such.

I am very happy with the speed of this laptop and would suggest it if you are a speed freak - I'm not a gamer but it appears this would work as well as the comparable $2K gamer PC.

I've got 50 hours of work use out of the J140us in the last week, and I'm pretty content so far. Getting it set up was a breeze. Transferring all of my files and images from my XP Pro unit was super easy. And so far, running Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (at the same time) hasn't created any speed lag. The i7 processor can definitely handle heavy multi-tasking. The computer itself is large and considerably heavier than my previous (Toshiba) laptop. But for me, its a work computer so I don't really notice it much. Battery seems good for running multiple applications all day. Have had to plug it in on my lunch break, and that's it. The touch screen is pretty convenient, especially for showing art proofs to customers.
The fingerprint swipe is also convenient for logging in and also can be set to log in to web accounts. Start up is really fast. Goes from off to work ready in about 10 seconds. Screen resolution is average, but not a deal breaker. (I think we've all been spoiled by high def TV's, so now every screen that's not high def is crap. I have a different opinion.) Sounds is decent for a laptop. I think the Beats audio makes it a tad better than a traditional laptop. So for either the work or home user, this would be a good purchase.
