I bought this after looking at an HP Chromebook. I wasn't looking at a Macbook because of cost and I wasn't interested in Windows because they always seem to have problems. The reason I bought this laptop instead is because it can do what I would need a Chromebook to do plus it has access to the Google Play store, including all of the apps I already have stored there. I haven't had to repurchase any of them. My first impressions of the HP Slatebook 14 is that it is thinner than any laptop I have ever owned and I like the dark grey and yellow look of it. Though I have come to find out it does collect finger prints and I am also a little worried that the yellow on the bottom of the laptop will eventually become dingy. This laptop also doesn't have a removable battery, which I think would be nice to have just in case it goes bad.
After powering on the Slatebook and following some simple instructions, the screen said my "tablet" was successfully setup. That is pretty much what it is. It is a tablet in laptop form. Which works for me! The screen is nice, though not as nice as other tablets and laptops I have seen and it has a responsive touch screen. The great thing about the Slatebook 14 is it is very easy to use compared to Windows for me. I am not very computer savvy, but I know how to do things on android. Unlike most tablets, with the exception of maybe the Surface, this laptop has three USB ports and an SD card slot which is a huge deal for me. I have used a flash drive to open up some documents and look at pictures. When using WPS Office, I have been able to save files to a flash drive and also an sd card with no problems while working offline. I like the option of not having to rely soley on cloud storage.

After 40+ years in IT, there's a certain kind of laptop I wanted, because I was just worn out from years of personal computing BS. In the end, what I really wanted was a well-made, attractive, lightweight while still sturdy, touchscreen, easy to use, cloud-enabled, well-equipped, great keyboard, secure affordable laptop.

I can't praise this one enough! I have now sold off my MacBook, Mac Mini, Surface 2, HP Chromebook 14, and iPad. This has all I need to be my one and only go-to computer.

There's a an earlier 1 star review on here - it seems that he didn't like reaching to touch the screen and, essentially, thought it should a be Retina quality display. Really? Seriously? First of all, it's a laptop. Not a convertible or only a tablet. So, you do have to reach over the keyboard. Second, the thing costs only $429. With a really nice 14" touchscreen. And Miracast. And GPS. And USB 3.0. And MicroSD slot. And HDMI.

What all do you WANT for $429???

This is a laptop that basically runs on Android.

BUILD: Similar to the HP Chromebook, the build is still top notch. The quality is decent and there's barely any flexing. The keys are tactile while the trackpad was ok in my opinion. Its a bit too firm for my tastes. But overall, its still a solid build and feels like a very good quality product despite this being a budget laptop.

SCREEN: Its great in person. The 1080p resolution does help tremendously and when compared to other laptops in the $400-$600 range, you'll most likely won't find another laptop with the same resolution. The colors are accurate with just enough saturation and not too washed out. Overall, its a very good screen, especially when playing 1080 content. The other reviewer said the screen was not good if you're off by a millimeter. Thats an exaggeration if anything. If I have a laptop and I'm using it... I'm usually sitting infront of it... not at a obscene angle. Overall, its still does a good job a reasonable viewing angles. The touch screen is accurate and responsive. Having this feature isn't bad at all since you're on an ANDROID operating system. In turn, making pulling down your settings and notification menu MUCH easier than using a keyboard. Tapping on links is still much fast than using the trackpad (or like any laptop) from my experience.

SPEAKERS: Their's 4 of them. Two ontop near the screen and two on the bottom down firing. Overall, they're loud indeed with minimal to no distortion whatsoever. The screen and the speakers so far has been the best part of the laptop.

USABILITY/EXPERIENCE: The most important part. I think this is the major selling point. Unlike Chromebooks which IS limited to what you can use through the Google Store.

100% happy with my purchase of this device. Android is my preferred OS, and the laptop is my preferred form factor for more "real" type work. If you're an Android user and use to Google's work/productivity apps (i.e. Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive OR any of the third party apps that do the exact same thing on Android and still work with MS Office docs) than this is what this device affords:

- You can truly and honestly have ONE OS environment on the phone in your pocket, tablet on your couch, and the laptop on the train and at work. Familiarity = immediate ease of use. ChromeOS is simple and easy to learn. But is still different and has it's own way of doing things. Android on this is the same Android as anywhere else.
- A SINGLE INVESTMENT IN SOFTWARE (read: apps). Look at the "All" tab in your Play Store store account. Add up all the $.99 and other apps that you paid for. For most, its a reasonably significant investment. Even for ChromeOS users there are some apps that don't have a counterpart from Android, so the possibility of paying again exists. It just doesn't with Android on a laptop.
- Light weight, both in OS and hardware leading to affordability.
- Functionality with Android Wear now. I know ChromeOS will have this very very soon, some of us are still childishly impatient.
- The best notification system available on any OS to stay on top of your digital life.
- Periferal devices seem to work like they were built for the device. My Logitech wireless trackball mouse works great and did so immediately. It works with gaming controllers as well!
- HDMI, SD Card reader, x2 USB ports (1-2.0 and 1-3.0), and 9 hours battery life. I am getting 16 of mixed use over a day.
