I recently ordered the Kensington Portable Combination Laptop Lock (K64670US) from Amazon, which arrived promptly. From reading other reviews (and the model number) this seems to be a newer model of the Kensington K64560US ComboSaver Portable Notebook Computer Lock.

The instructions to set the combination were not "written" but the pictures are easy enough to follow or figure out in seconds. While it seems previous models came with a key of some sort, this requires either a paper clip (as depicted in the instructions) or a flat head screwdriver. Simply push down the screw, turn 90 degrees, set the combination, turn the screw back, and you're done.

This model has a thin/light cable which coils. These are great attributes for portability, but some may be concerned with it's functionality. The coiling makes it slightly annoying to loop and unloop, and some may find the cable to be thin in comparison to other models. Also on my Thinkpad T420 there is some wiggle room but not much about which to be concerned.

However, all locks must be viewed not as permanent security devices, but as deterrents - at the very least to prevent someone from simply picking up your laptop at a coffee shop or library if you happen to step away. This lock does the job well enough, while being more portable (important since it's primarily for portable computers), and at a reasonable price.

I saw several reviews of different locks that do not properly fit to 2011 MacbookPro. This is NOT the case of this one which fits snugly in my mac. I recommend.

I like most everything about the fit and security of this lock. I have set my own number combination and it's easy to change if I want. The fit into the lock slot on my late 2011 Macbook Pro is great. There is even a rubber grommet that protects the Macbook for wear marks around the lock slot.
However, my one thing with this lock is the damn coil is so tight it's hard to get any distance out of it and do work! Just setting up in a public library can be a pain at times and at any point it can slip out of your hand and fire off in some random direction. I really wish I got the straight cable because there has been a few times where this cables tension has start to drag my Macbook towards the edge of the table. I know thats an extreme case, but I wonder how many people have accidentally put one of these through their computer screen or damaged something else by accident? Thats my only gripe; I use this thing every day and it brings pretty good piece of mind.

For starters, the cable on this lock seems a little on the thin side. It's definitely strong, and probably wouldn't yield to any tools that the average burglar would have, but I have very little confidence that it would hold up against a determined assault by a professional thief. That said, the cable isn't the real problem with this lock.

The real problem is the unlocking mechanism. There is no user-input required to unlock the lock; when the dials all hit the right points, the lock magically and instantly springs open, no matter how fast you spin the wheel. This means a thief does not have to "try" all 10^4 potential combinations - they can scroll through the first three wheels' 10^3 combinations and spin the fourth wheel rapidly on each possibility. This dramatically reduces the security of the device.

All in all, it's not a bad device. While it's not as secure as it ought to be, it's still fairly secure, and will deter 99.9% of potential thieves simply by being there and looking intimidating. Having no key to lose is only a plus in my opinion.

As a frequent business traveler, I was looking for a theft-deterrent solution for my laptop when I need to leave it at a temporary office space. I did not want to fuss with a lock and it had to be portable. This product fit my needs. The space it takes up in my bag is negligible and the bright red color in itself is a deterrent. The produce was well-priced and appears very sturdy. Definitely a keeper.

I think it would be unlikely to make an inadvertent mistake when entering a code for the lock. 1st, you turn the slot 90', then turn the 4 dials to select the code word (two letters at a time per dial are displayed prior to being moved into the selection slot), after the code is correctly entered, turn back the slot the 90' to set your code. The slot cannot be accidentally moved as it must be depressed while turned using a paper clip, small screw driver, etc. Hold down a button to insert the lock into the computer's Kensington slot, release the button, then randomize the code letters. The cable is coiled and expands from 3" to 6'. Remove the lock from the computer by moving the code letters into place, hold down the button, and remove the lock. My lock is stable ~ there is no wiggle in either the letter dials or the clip that locks it into the computer. I purchased the lock so that I can use my laptop in an expo booth and not worry about someone walking off with the computer as I'm occupied dealing with a customer. I would not depend on this style of lock should I need to walk away from the computer as likely wire cutters will untie it from the cable. I placed my order on the a Thurs and received the item on Monday.
