I got this Micro USB Bluetooth Adapter to work with Linux (Ubuntu)

I gave up on Windows about a year ago. I do not have Windows on my computer. I am using Linux, in fact Ubuntu and Zorin, on my desktop computer.
I got my first computer in 1978! I have used a lot of computers over the years and a lot of O/S.
I know a little bit about computers but the truth is just have not done much with Bluetooth and do not know much about it.
I think it is time to learn a little about Bluetooth and see if it will do anythig for me.
My cell phone has, of couse, Bluetooth. I also have a Creative Sound Blaster Axx SBX 20 Sound Blaster and a very small "Magic Cube, a small cube that is a baby version of the SBX20.
So I ordered the Micro USB Bluetooth CSR 4.0 Adapter. Great price and very fast delivery.
It came with a mini DVD that has drives on it I guess. I did not use the DVD because I am using Linux.
I plugged in the dongle to a 3.0 USB port on my desktop. I went to the Ubuntu software center on my computer and found a utility that supports Bluetooth. I loaded the program on my computer.
Then I ran the simple little program. It detected that I had Bluetooth and then found all of my Bluetooth devices.
I do have a Chromebook but I do not have it here right now. Soon as I get it back I will link it to my desktop computer using Bluetooth.
I forgot I did not link a Bluetooth headset that I have. I will do that later. That might be something that I could use. It is rare for me to even use my cell phone so I was not even planning to use the headset. But I am wondering if I link the headset to my desktop via Bluetooth if I could use it for the audio for YouTube videos that I make. Like I said.. Lots of things to play with and I got a lot to learn.
One thing I did learn already.. If you don't have Bluetooth on your computer this Micro USB Bluetooth CSR 4.0 Adapter is a GREAT idea.

Works well on my Win7 Desktop System.

Used this to add Bluetooth to my test bench Windows 7 system. Native drivers loaded with no issues, *however* if you want to use this unit to drive a virtual COM port, you will need to physically unplug and replug the unit after the driver installs for the VCP driver to work correctly. A reboot on a laptop would probably work, but on my system the unit is in a powered hub that didn't truly restart the unit. I feel this is more a Win7 issue than the dongle's fault. After I did that, VCP connections were a breeze.

Windows 8.1 does not work out of the box

Product arrived in good shape and on time.

It seems that I am the first reviewer to try to use this dongle with windows 8.1, however, and the drivers do not work.

A quick search around shows many people having similar issues with CSR on windows 8 so it doesn't seem isolated to me.

I am currently restoring my system to before I installed the drivers since they caused explorer to fail to start after I rebooted. I will try a few of the fixes and update if any of them work, but I expect I may have to find another product.

Linux Friendly Bluetooth Dongle

So far its working great. I'm able to transfer files to my Fire phone from Xubuntu 15.04, and more importantly I can play my entire mp3 collection straight to my soundbar under the TV about 15 feet away from my PC. It will get a bit choppy if I stand directly between the PC and the soundbar, but because it's plugged into a back USB port and there is some metal case between the 2 devices I can't fault it for that. I suspect when I find my 6 inch USB extension cable that I have around here somewhere that will resolve the issue.
No drivers or setup was needed, just used the Bluetooth app in System Settings to pair the device with the soundbar and the phone. If I loose connection to the soundbar (like after watching TV), I just have to hit the pair button on the soundbar remote and it will start playing audio from the PC again without having to go back into the app.
It was cheap, and it does what I wanted it to do, so 5 stars on this dongle.

A bargain that should be enjoyed

This is an EXCELLENT item, but more documentation would be helpful. It works with Win XP on my home-built CPU. I have paired it with Galaxy S5's and Galaxy Tab 4, Tab 3 Lite, and Tab 10.5, as well as a (cursing, sorry...) horrid LG Cosmos 3 cell phone. The thing one needs to remember is that OLDER versions of Bluetooth drivers "SHOULD" be uninstalled before installing the software on the mini-CD. I do enjoy hooking to TWO devices at one time & the higher speed than Bluetooth v2 can do, while not having to use my WiFi connections. This is a great value, also, and the low profile is a plus with toddlers playing at grandpa's computer. ;-)
