Excellent laptop cooler

Bought this for me. Got one for my son last year for his gaming laptop.

It works so well in keeping his gaming laptop that I figured I can use one. I don't do games but put my laptop on its paces with video processing.

Love the fact that this cooler, available from various vendors under different name, but effectively is the patented "T5" has one big fan in the middle and four on the outside corners which match perfectly with the location of most laptop hard drives and heating vents.

Having the fans positioned where the exact hot points of the laptop helps dissipate heat faster and keeps the laptop cool reducing the risk of overheating.

I love that the fans are illuminated when turned on that makes it easy to determine if the fans are running or not. No need to squint and shine a flashlight on it to make sure.

You can switch on just the big fan or just the four outer perimeter fans or all fans. I normally turn all fans on.

Having it powered by the laptop through the USB connection is a big plus. No need for an extra cord to plug in to the wall plus when you turn off my laptop, the fans turn off too.

Absolutely two thumbs up.

UPDATE ... 7/7/15

One of the fans has been noisy as though it is out of balance. Tapping on the offending fan a few times sometimes quiets it but the noise returns after a while or after you turn it off and back on. I figured the fan probably needs to be reseated and/or lubricated.

I finally got around to it. Under the unit, I removed 4 visible screws. Then under each of the 4 rubber feet, I removed a screw. I then removed the two push button switches. They simply slide out.Read more ›

Got a gaming/high performance laptop? This is the fan for you

I have a gaming laptop equipped with SLI graphic cards. Needless to say, it spits fire hotter than Donald Sterling spits racism.

My old Targus fan was decent, but when I upgraded to dual graphic card, it became obsolete.

Samyo fan has 5 fans. The fans are placed well across the platform (made up of plastic, but surprisingly stout). The fans cool my hard drive, both graphic cards at top corners, and main processor all well. It is almost as if the manufacturer knew exactly where my laptop needed cooling and tailor-made this laptop cooling pad.

Now, my only complaint about this product is its turbine noise generator. Packaging says the product is supposed to be noise free, but that's not the case here. Obviously, when I have my headsets on and play BF4, the turbine noise can't be detected.

Other people (when I'm gaming) have complained to me that the fans are too loud. This can be mitigated if I turn off the main fan in the center (via the switches) but I don't like to compromise my laptop cooling for the sake of someone else trying to get a quite reading time around a gamer. What were they thinking trying to enjoy peace and quite next to a fervent gamer who spits swears and frustration hotter than Tom Cruise losing his mind on Oprah.

In conclusion, buy this fan for hot laptops. It is relatively loud if you don't have anything else to listen to.

Great fans, but USB ports quickly fall apart

I was set to give this device a five star review because it met all of my needs and was so affordable, considering the cost of heat damage to my high end laptop computer. Unfortunately, I have only had the cooler stand for three months and both USB ports have already failed. The problem appears to be in the mounting of the ports, which become flimsy and begin to wobble and lose connection pretty quickly after you start using them. Within a short time they become entirely unusable, and then you have a great table-top for your computer with no fan power. Fans still work great, but you would have to physically hold the cord in just the right place to get them to stay on, and there is no way that I can see to safely jury-rig a solution. I would give the product only one star for breaking so soon, but it was cheap enough that I can just expense it out. I'm hoping Samyo works out this issue.

Overall, looks good.

Please note that my review is based off of the first week after delivery. If a problem comes up, I will update my review and note otherwise.

I have a 17" laptop and this cooler holds it fine. Although the LED lights aren't necessary in my opinion, they are nice in the fact that you can see that all fans are operating properly. The cooler does its job. I don't have accurate temperature decreases, but when gaming, my laptop no longer overheats. I've had problems with short-circuiting in previous coolers, so hopefully this one rings true in the future.

The cooler is very sturdy and the USB plugs into the back. There is another USB slot next to the plugin so you don't lose a USB port in the process.

I don't have any feedback on how it sits in the lap. I usually use my laptop at a desk and if I use it on my lap, I don't set it directly on my legs.

Overall this seems to be a good product at first sight. Like I said, I'll update if anything happens and why it would have happened.
