I wanted to get a cooling fan for my router (Asus RT-N66U) since the router does get quite warm, to the point where I think if I give it more load it would get hot (router itself is great though). So what I was looking for was a small & cheap cooling fan, and this one seem to fit the requirements! The previous reviews did mention several issues, but for $7, I thought why not just give it a try?

Pros
- Perfect size for a router (legs can be extended to hold a laptop, or contracted to hold a netbook or a router)
- Very quiet, can not hear it at all
- Cheap, only $7 when I bought it

Cons
- Fan is extremely weak

The fan sucks air from the top and distributes it to the side. However, the fan is extremely weak. Someone else mentioned it's weaker than a baby blowing out a candle. Let me elaborate that: it's almost only as strong as our normal breathing. Maybe a teeny tiny more than that.

I just installed it this morning, so will check back in the evening to see if I even see a remote difference. Not very hopeful though.

10/26 - My router definitely is less warm and at an acceptable temperature. Still wouldn't recommend it for anything too hot though.

Summary: Do not buy this product if you intend to use the fan. Buy this product if you do not intend to use the fan.

The design of this product is good - foldable feet that adjust to different size laptop chassis, rubber grip surfaces so the laptop doesn't fall off and its not the sexiest thing on the planet, but the really cool thing is you don't even see it under the laptop when you're using it.

The bad thing, and I've run into this on other cooling pads, is the quality of the fan is terrible. A little baby blowing out birthday candles can produce a higher volume of air to cool a laptop. The other thing is, and maybe this was just the one I received, but when using the cooling pad, as designed, the fan sounds like someone threw a handful of gravel into it. Now, if you turn it upside down...its whisper quiet. What?! Are you kidding me?

I've used this Antec Lansing cooling pad for years (see link below), and recommend it highly. The only problem is, its not particularly portable. It is quiet (a little loud on high, but at least you know its working - the sound is the air getting sucked through the cooling pad, not a gravel-like sound or rattle.)

Cheers!

My intended application was to use velcro tape to mount this device on the back of an HP Pro x2 2-in-1/ultrabook/whatever they call em. The GPU (Intel 4200) causes big jumps in CPU temperature. In a non-scientific test, a desk fan blowing on the back of the tablet's case was able to keep it cool enough to sustain video game play. This product failed miserably!

Pros:
-Lightweight and slim. It really is a clever design and shape for a product, but very poorly executed. It was light enough to be mounted by 4 pieces of velcro tape. The legs made this even easier as I had a perfect place to put the tape.
-Fan and USB hub from one USB port is great! I bought this only expecting a USB fan, so seeing three usb ports on the unit was cool. If it wasn't larger than my current USB hub I'd have a use for this guy. It's size, obviously, is due to also being a "cooling" fan.

Cons:
-The fan is even weaker than I expected after reading reviews. It BARELY moves air. Put your hand in front of your mouth and exhale normally... reduce that feeling by about 60% and you have an idea of how little air this fan moves.
-Had absolutely no effect on the tablet's temperature. If, like me, you are looking for a portable cooling solution for a small device then you should probably skip this one.

Pros:

-Portability
-3 ports of USB 2
-Cool design
-1 year of warranty
-Quiet
-Light

Cons:

-The air flow is a little low
-A little balancing issue
-Conflicts with airflow

The cooling pad sucks air from the top and dissipates on the sides. My laptop sucks air from the bottom so it's fighting for air. I also found it wiggles a little when I put my laptop on. The legs on the pad is not fully balanced. The platform is much stable if you use it upside down but that's not how it is designed.

It does not provide the airflow my laptop needed.

UPDATE: 8/27/11
I just bought

ARCTIC Portable USB-Powered Cooling Unit for Laptop UCACO-NC001-BLA01 - has 4 USB2 ports!
17 dollars

It works great! I highly recommend it over this one. There is another one:

Antec notebook cooler s
about 26 dollars

It has bigger airflow but no USB ports. Also more expensive than the Arctic portable cooling unit.

The cooling fan is nice, seems sturdy enough to hold a 11 inch laptop. If you buy this because your laptop is overheating, don't do it. It only produces 7 CFM, but I have to say it feels more like 5 CFM. To put this into perspective, a standard 80mm computer case fan (most come with 120mm now a days) puts out 10~40 CFM. With that said, it is super quiet and it works GREAT to cool off my overheating CISCO router. The total size without the arms extended is a little smaller than a standard wireless router. A lot of routers now a days have a USB port for storage/3G modem, so it is perfect to keep your router from overheating. For laptops, I don't see this working very well. Plus you won't be able to put it on your legs.
