I bought one of these, which seemed nice. Then I bought another.

I read in the instructions about the risk of accidentally resetting the combination, and the manufacturer cautioned that there was no remedy for this. I didn't worry, cause I thought, "Only a dummy would do that, and I'm no dummy." Well guess what? Like some other posters, I accidentally reset my combination while normally applying the lock, and now I have to cut it off my computer.

By design, the combination is intended to be reset by twisting the cable in the lock body to enter reset mode, setting the tumblers to the desired numerals, then untwisting the cable. That seems sensible until you consider that, to engage the lock in the computer's slot, you must twist the lock body WITHOUT TWISTING THE CABLE. If the cable is resting on the table with the computer then there's not much risk. But if the cable is hanging off the table, then the cable's weight may be enough to hold the cable stationary while the lock body twists around it. If that happens, then you can accidentally reset the combination to an unknown value in a matter of seconds. I never noticed it until I tried to unlock, then I was horrified to discover what I'd done. Now I have to go after it with either a hack saw or a dremel.

This lock is a trap waiting to spring on you. I'd never recommend it or use it again without a pair of cutters on hand to cut the cable. Definitely wouldn't give it to my kids or anybody else. It seems to have nice workmanship, but the design is ridiculous.

An earlier reviewer from last week (same week I bought my lock) hit the nail on the head. My husband and I are fairly savvy with this type of thing and this lock is very difficult to engage in two ways: 1) setting the initial combination from the factory default was challenging to say the least. The instructions leave a lot to be desired and 2) After several days of using the lock with no issue (with my own combination) I was having trouble engaging the lock this morning - it would not lock, it kept unlocking, despite scrambling the numbers as I had done previously and I think I inadvertenly changed my combination and now I can't get the damn thing off my laptop AT ALL!!!! Now I have to figure out how to cut this thing off my laptop. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

I'd give this, apparently well engineered, bargain basement lock 5 stars but after a trip I re-attached it and now it doesn't recognize my combination. It's not impossible that I accidentally changed it but I don't think so. Thus my nightmarish experience resembles that of several other posters. Now where did I put those wire cutters?

After reading the reviews about resetting the combination by mistake, I was confident I could avoid that problem. But in the middle of trying to get the lock on or off, my actions pushed the cable in and twisted it and reset the code!!! Fortunately, I had not changed all the numbers and after about 45 minutes, hit on the "right" combination. But I was using it at the office and just knew I had permanently attached the cable to my employer's laptop. I am replacing it right away -- never again. The way of setting the combination is a design flaw. Don't try this product.

When I first got the package, I was immediately alarmed because the instructions were wrriten by someone who clearly lacked a basic understanding of the English language. When I tried to set the lock, nothing happened. I couldn't get it out of the unlocked position. This is useless to me if I can't open it.

I'm buying a higher quality product...

Their universal cable "tip" on the combo end worked in two of the four laptops I tried. Unfortunately, it didn't work in the Dell or HP that I wanted to use it with.
