thinkpad [ x200, x220, x230 ] used to be synonym for a sturdy 'business grade', ultraportable-yet-easy-to-disassemble laptop. not so much anymore. for the older models i was able to instruct via the phone my colleagues from other offices how to replace a hard drive or add an extra memory stick. x240 requires removing the whole bottom cover [few screws and quite fragile plastic latches], it's still doable, it's still documented in the maintenance manual from lenovo but requires more manual work and feels more risky to be done by someone who is using a screwdrivers once every few years.

i'm used to touchpads from dell laptops, touchpad on x240 just does not feel right, it seems to have mind of it's own.

on the positive side: this computer is really small and lightweight; feels pretty snappy, has more than decent battery life [ with 2 built in batteries - 10h estimated on the power saving profile].

This is my fifth or sixth Thinkpad and I bought this X240 to replace my four year old X201 which is shutting down all the time (apparently the shutdown is a common issue of the X201). I first ordered the X240 on the Lenovo web site with an estimated 33 days delivery date. Three weeks later I received an email from Lenovo informing me that they had a 10 days delay. That is when I found the same X240 (but with an I7 chip instead of I5) on Amazon, $ 200 cheaper and with two days Amazon Prime delivery.

The X240 comes loaded with W7/64 and also with W8.1 on disks. After the initial setup of my X240 I immediately upgraded (?) to W8.1
The look of the X240 is very similar to the X201,but the screen is 16/9. The mouse stick / touch pad combination feels different from the X201, but you can deactivate the mouse function of the touch pad and only use it for the W8.1 functions.
Supposedly the X240 is a lot faster than the X201, with a i7 chip and a 16 GB SSD, but unfortunately the unit has been super slow since day one, frequently froze up and rebooting taking 15 to 30 minutes. The biggest disappointment was that booting was not fast at all, as I had expected it to be with the SSD drive. I spoke 3 times to the friendly Lenovo support. They were not able to identify the reason of the problem but taking remote control of the unit they saw it for themselves and agreed that something was wrong with either the motherboard or the hard disk. I returned the unit to Amazon (always prompt and efficient) and ordered the same unit again. Hopefully it was this specific unit and not the X240 in general.
I will write an update after receiving the new X240. This time I will not(at least not immediately) do the W8.1 upgrade as I have a small suspicion that this caused the problem.

I have had 3 Lenovo laptops in the past. But, I bought this computer recently and it just keeps shutting down - started after one month of normal use. I have sent it back and forth to Lenovo three times - they are not fixing it, and not refunding either. I'm stuck in limbo with no working computer and I've spent hours dealing with this, not to mention $1400.

The computer can't not turn down or sleep. Once, I closed the lid and put the laptop in my backpack. I thought the laptop was sleep, but it didn't. When I opened my backpack, the laptop was really hot, almost burned out.

I've been waiting for this technology for a very long time. Powerful processor, adequate RAM (though 16GB option would have been nice), fast startup and shutdown times and the best battery life of any decent laptop in history. Up to 20 hours with some battery upgrades, unreal.

Plus TOUCHSCREEN is available on some models.
