This PC comes with windows 7 Pro installed & 4 DVDs to install Windows 8.1. There are 2 versions (with/without DVD drive). For those planning on installing windows 8.1 on the version without a DVD drive - you will need an external USB DVD drive. For Windows 8.1 installation: A few minutes after inserting the 4th DVD you will be prompted to insert the 5th if available otherwise press NO. At this point press NO then go about your business, Have a nap & come back about 6 hours later. At some point the installation will appear to be hung - between C:\DRIVERS\DPINST.CMD & C:\SWWORK\DOWORK.CMD with file not found errors (for REBOOT.TAG & PEBOOT.TAG) - Happens regardless of full install option or not. Ignore this - take your nap & come back 6 hrs later. If you kill the installation & start over you get the same error. If you don’t let the install complete in its own good time Windows may come up - but with missing components. I think the reason for the price drop at Tiger - not that many people have the patience for a 6+ hr installation of Windows 8.1. If you have the patience for the Windows 8.1 installation - it is a little slow but for $200 it OK. I got it at TigerDirect for $200 (no DVD drive version). Would give it 3.5 stars

Update 5/23/2015:
For Windows 8.1 the option to install without drivers will result in better performance - no bloatware & a faster PC. You will have to manually download & install all the drivers from the manufacturers website (via Ethernet or Sneakerne t- the wireless adapter driver will be missing from this install option).

Windows Update takes several hours regardless of which installation option you choose. There are over 130 updates. Go to power options an set "put the computer to Sleep" to "never", start Windows Update & go about your business. Come back about 6 hrs later.

Let me try to be fair on both sides.

Pros:
1. This is a <$300 laptop, that is NOT a cloud-based one or a tablet. Meaning, it actually has a SATA hard drive rather than a ~20GB flash memory and a full desktop OS. If you search for laptops around this price range, most found laptops required streaming service because their flash memory is too small to store any practically sized files.
2. Also within this price range a lot of the non-cloud laptops have processors worse than an AMD E1, believe me. To be fair for $200+, an low-end AMD processor is about what you can get without compromising too much on other aspects of the laptop.
3. 15 inch screen, although only supports half HD (720p)

Cons:
1. It is slow, by all standards. I am not arguing against that statement. Yet with some optimization and a little bit of patience it is not unusable.
2. Made with plastic shell. I understand to cut the cost down some compromising is required but, personally, I cannot withstand the plastic feeling when I first pull it out of the box.
3. Graphic card sucks. But hey, the seller made it clear that it has a on-board low-end graphic card.

In general, this laptop is the best in its class if: 1. you have a limited budget (<$300), 2. cannot take a laptop that always requires good internet connection to use (chrome book, cloud book, etc.), 3. want a decent sized screen, and most importantly, 4. have some patience, know the physical limitations of the hardware and would only use it for casual use (not 3D gaming, not full HD streaming, and not data calculating).
Otherwise, consider something else.

I want to echo another reviewer that stated to only buy this computer if you had no other choice.

The biggest issues I have with this computer.

Processor: The AMD E-Series processor in this computer is unbelievably slow. During setup there were over 130 updates needed for Windows 7. It took at least 6 hours to install these. It's possible that Windows 8.1 would run more efficiently on this computer, however I don't have the time to wait for it to install.

The wireless card is also weak in this unit. I had to have my client call Comcast to relocate their wireless gateway to the same room for the wireless to work well. It had been in the floor below and would only operate around 1-4Mbps, on a 30Mbps connection. There was no driver update available from Lenovo. It is possible that the Windows 8.1 driver would improve things, however this is a review on the system on how it was shipped.

For those reading, I would not recommend any system with an AMD E-series processor in it. Even the AMD A4/A6 are slow compared to Intel offerings.

If you get one of these computers, have a good book, or two, or three handy to keep yourself entertained while the computer updates itself.

If you don't need normal Windows apps to run, you would be better off getting a similar priced Chromebook.

Believe the other reviews. This thing is slower than a turtle low crawling through peanut butter. But it does what it needs to do.

Honestly this is one of those computers you run out and buy because your old computer died and it's 2am and you have a lot of work/homework to get done and you're strapped for cash and you don't have a choice. So if you have an emergency then by all means, but this isn't something I would use as an everyday computer, but keep it for a backup....
