Better than the low price would lead you to expect. Better than a Chromebook.

This is my first day with the little machine, and so far I am very happy with it. I've bought dozens of computers over the years, for both business and personal use, so I am rather picky, and at the same time, rather patient with little differences between products.

Love the screen, its matte finish makes it comfortable to use in all light levels, and the quality of the image is excellent. The keyboard feels good, a quality tactile experience, although I am used to typing on a full sized keyboard and I have to slow down a bit to adapt to this slightly scrunched layout. Setup was painless, and thanks to Google and Chrome, all my browser preferences and bookmarks were there instantly. The first thing I did was download Chrome, as i will not use Internet Explorer if I can avoid it.

As small format Windows PCs go, the machine is better than you'd expect at this price. Not loaded with memory or a really fast processor, the performance is suitable mainly for straightforward websurfing, email, watching some videos, shopping, banking, googling. CPU intensive or memory intensive apps and games will probably not fare all that well on this little guy. But for everyday student-homemaker use, it's great, and I like it much better than a Chromebook for various reasons, one of which is, there are windows apps that won't run on a Chromebook and I am not willing to give those up.

Now, the biggest single thing about this laptop: It's a Windows 8 machine, and this is my first exposure to that operating system. My daily driver laptop, which I have been using heavily for 5 years, is a Windows 7 device, and before that I was a devoted Windows XP fan.Read more ›

Buyer Beware!

I bought this laptop on Prime Day because it was small and thin (good for travel and being mobile) and was a Windows OS. I am the owner of a Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpad that is about 6 years old, running Windows 7 and I LOVE IT! Given my enthusiasm for my ThinkPad, I thought giving this a try was worth it. Upon receipt the Free Windows 10 upgrade was just around the corner so I really didn't do much with this device other than begin to browse some and try to learn Windows 8.1. Can safely say I am not a fan of Windows 8 so was really happy when I finally got my alert to download Windows 10 .. but that's when the trouble started. This device has a 32GB hard drive. 22GB is partitioned to normal use, 6GB is supposed to be a recovery partition and the other 2GB not real sure. Well of the 22GB for operational use roughly 12GB is used by the baseline image on the device. So, when the WIN10 upgrade was available I was unable to download as there wasn't enough space (Note: could download but not enough space to install). While I hadn't really added much I tried to purge anything unnecessary to recover space. The best I could get to was 14GB but WIN10 needs 16GB. Next I tried to use an external hard-drive to complete the install but it kept stalling and couldn't sense the external drive on the multiple re-starts needed as part of the WIN10 install process.

Frustrated with the whole thing and only being about 15 days past receipt, I thought .. well maybe if I do a factory reset this will give me the space I need. Oh no .. although Windows 8 has a very user friendly "Recovery" menu it couldn't sense the recovery partition.Read more ›

Great notebook for basic use.

This is a decent low cost notebook PC for basic use, though it does require some work to properly set it up.
My review will be in 2 major parts, first is the hardware, then getting the system on windows 10 (the upgrade is worth it as it performs better than 8.1), and finally, a review of the hardware.

The system comes with an Intel Celeron N2840 (Dual core with no hyperthreading, with a base clock speed of 2.16GHz, and a boost clock speed of 2.57GHz. (Due to the decent passive cooling, the system can pretty much stay at its boost clock nonstop during full load without throttling). The performance at its boost clock is similar to that of older core 2 duo based laptops (specifically, the Intel Core 2 Duo P8400) (the Notebookcheck website has a number of benchmarks done on this CPU)
It also has 2GB of RAM, of which 119MB is reserved for the GPU, and, thus leaving you with 1929MB of user accessible RAM (DDR3 1333). It has a read speed of 8352MB/s, and a write speed of 5260MB/s.
The GPU performance is very low, it will not handle much beyond random 3D games from 2011. Overall, do not get this system to game on it natively. On the other hand, the GPU has full hardware acceleration, and thus it works quite well for game streaming.
The storage performance is also decent for a low end system, with read speeds up to 168MB/s (buffered speeds at 210MB/s, tested in AIDA64), and a Write speed of up to 124MB/s
The read and write speeds far exceed the performance you will find in even 7200RPM laptop drives, especially when you consider the low 4K reads and writes, (this makes the system boot rather quickly).

Now for the display, this is where the budget nature really shows its self.Read more ›
