I ordered mine on during the Amazon one day sale when it was priced around $519, and I received it yesterday. Overall it's a nice looking laptop in a lot of aspects, but there are some areas that let you know it is a budget laptop. This is an early review and I can see myself keeping this for a while so I will write a follow up at some point.

I am starting a graduate program this fall and wanted a laptop with a strong processor so corei5 or i7, at least 8GB of RAM, 14" 1080p screen (I like this format), and I wanted it to be easily carried around (4.5lbs or less). My budget could have gone higher but I found this nailed all of the major areas I was looking for. This was the other laptop I was considering http://www.amazon.com/K501LX-EB71-15-6-Inch-GeForce-Graphics-Windows/dp/B00YR6BMS2. I was hesitant with the Asus because of the touch pad layout (off center) and the potential for the screen size/graphics adding extra battery drain, weight, and noise.

When Amazon did their daily deal and dropped the price, the S41 became a no brainer. I liked the Asus but a SSD and 950m weren't enough to make me want to pay close to another $400. I have a gaming PC corei5 4670k with GTX 760 at home so I don't need dedicated graphics in a laptop (I'm not studying architecture or design in which GPU rendering would be useful). I thought the hybrid drive in the s41 would be ok versus the SSD in the Asus but I'm not so sure after initial impressions (I've used SSDs for a couple of years now).

Pros:
Light - roughly as light as a medium sized text book, with the bonus of being able to work as if it was many text books (just get electronic copies).
Quiet - I can barely hear the fans or hard drive under load, well suited for working in a library.Read more ›

Love this laptop so far

Processor Description: Intel Core i5 Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I don't have a whole lot of lap tops in my world, so this is more of a non-techie review - I only have the Acer Aspire V5-122P-0863 11.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Chill Silver) I got from Amazon Vine in 2013. Wow, what a difference. The speed is lightning fast, I'm not a gamer nor do I spend all day watching videos, but the web pages I have visited load quickly and never get buggy (I swear, this is faster than my desktop with Windows 7). The navigation pad is very easy, and nice and large. The screen display is excellent quality, and just perfect for pulling up the live kitten cam and watching the kittens play :)

The initial battery charge took about an hour, and it held a charge for I think at least four hours when I had it in constant use - again, I'm not playing games - but when I turned on the music it seemed not to last quite as long. Still, much longer battery life than the Acer Aspire I have been using. One funny thing about the power cord, and the only reason I'm knocking off a star at this time is the 'box' on the charging cord gets very hot at times. Not all the time, sometimes not at all; but it did get very, very warm the first time I took it out of the box to charge. I haven't contacted the manufacturer yet, and it hasn't seemed that warm since then (again - not all the time), but I don't let it plug in long and I don't walk off for hours leaving it unattended.

As for the keyboard? I am an old school typist in the days of IBM Selectrics, and smaller keyboards on tablets and the Acer Aspire I have just don't cut it for me. I don't like to hunt and peck, yet I don't always want to see at the desktop so I can type fast on a real keyboard.Read more ›

Not bad but there's some flaws

After searching around for a laptop for college, I finally settled on this because it was a decent price, had the screen resolution I was looking for, and looked nice aesthetically. That said, for $650 I was expecting a bit more than what I got. It's not horrible, just not quite what I was hoping for.

Pros: Lightweight, nice design, perfect size, quiet
Cons: The track pad buttons are rather noisy, it's somewhat difficult to double click or highlight things, the screen is a bit blurry at times depending on what you're looking at, images aren't as clear and vibrant as one would hope them to be, the body of the laptop attracts fingerprints like nobody's business, the corners are sharp (especially so for the back corners of the lid).

I've only had this laptop for three days now but these are the things I've noticed so far. I'm sure that if I decide to keep this laptop I'll get used to it.

Impressive machine! I bought this for a friend but took it upon myself to set it up for her. The upgrade to Windows 10 was flawless. I have had many PCs and now have several Apples so I am pretty critical when it comes to rating a machine. Most of the ones I found felt like cheap plastic computers and felt kludgey. This thing for the dollars is a super impressive machine. The case feels nice and strong but is super light! The keys have a nice tactile response and are not noisy. It is a super fast machine for its class. I only had one problem... the trackpad kept going in and out and I was super bummed because I was giving this to someone and could not do it with a problem like this. I figured out that there is a function key that toggles the trackpad on and off - I was turning it off when wiping it with a rag to keep it super clean. Once I realized this no more problem. The only thing I was disappointed with was the speakers as they are pretty tiny sounding but its a minor nit. -||- Got feedback from the recipient - She absolutely loves it. Loves the size of the laptop but while still super light. Perfect for readability but still a compact light machine to carry around.
