Solid and powerful machine with classic design. I couldn't be happier with my new ThinkPad W530. The build quality is superb and the performance is exceptional. If you are looking for a very powerful and capable laptop which you can easily upgrade and repair yourself, look no further. If like me, you're not a big fan of all the new hermetically sealed aluminum laptops on the market now with razor sharp unfriendly edges and virtually no options for upgrading after the sale or even replacing a battery, look no further. If like me, you'd rather have a laptop that has a full compliment of every port you could ever need instead of two USB ports and a collection of easy to lose adapters that cost $30 a piece to replace just so you can simply connect to Ethernet, look no further. This is an extremely durable, exceptionally well engineered laptop and true to legendary ThinkPad form it is practical to a T. I decided to upgrade my hard drive to an SSD after purchase. No problem. The hard drive has it's OWN little door on the bottom. I removed one Phillips head screw, slid the old drive out and the new one in and was done in 3 minutes. The same goes for a RAM upgrade. Try that on any laptop on sale at Best Buy or at an Apple store. The finish of the W530 is beautiful and repels smears and fingerprints and won't scratch easily. The keyboard is excellent and comfortable and offers TWO forms of lighting. Multi-stage backlighting from within the keys AND an overhead ThinkLight that lights the whole keyboard from above. Take your pick. The W530 is one of the last ThinkPads Lenovo is making with the tried and true multibutton trackpad, which is one reason I bought it. It's successor the W540, unfortunately has a giant trackpad that acts like one single huge button, much like Mac only it works horribly.Read more ›

Not sure what's up with the negative reviews. Lenovo laptops are the only ones we buy anymore. They are solid and dependable and they get the job done. We've had HP and Acer and Sony and the Lenovos are just better. We are a small business so we need rock steady laptops that always work. This one does the job very well.

Very happy with my new laptop

I have been using it for a couple of weeks and all I can say is that this is the best laptop I've had so far (previous: Dell, HP and now a ThinkPad :D). I can use it for professional work (Matlab, AutoCad,...) and for personal projects too (video editing, video playing, etc). It's quite powerful. I also like the way it looks, before buying it I thought it was kind of ugly, but in real life it just looks great. The keybord at night is quite cool!

Lenovo W530

I'm very pleased with this computer, the tech support and the seller. Some people may be surprised that a person would order a discontinued model but the new W540 has a number pad on the right of the keyboard and I prefer the keyboard without the number pad.
Performance of the W530 has been excellent and it appears faster than some of the i7 consumer models available. The screen is also very good with clear text that is properly sized (some programs such as Quicken do not seem to display properly on some of the super-resolution screens coming to market). My W530 came with a conventional 500 GB hard drive and i replaced it with a 256 GB SSD from Samsung. I highly recommend this as it makes the computer even faster.

Good upgrade

SUMMARY:
The W530 is a T540p with 2 extra DIMM sockets. It is a major technology improvement over the 60 series Thinkpads, but may be heavier.

RECOMMEND:
If you are okay with the weight, this is a great laptop. If you need i7 and Quadro, and can endure the 540 series limitations, that will save you over a pound.

CAVEATS:
This review is just my experience during a corporate upgrade.
I'm a tall, large-handed power-user with 33 years of computer experience.
This means I also have expectations that may not match yours. YMMV

To get comparisons against multiple different laptops, see Tom's Hardware, CNET, etc.
To get product specifications, Lenovo's website, via any popular search engine, will give you summary, technical, etc details.

PROBLEMS:
* Weight. Mostly in the power brick. There are two power upgrades. One is Intel i7. The other is nVidia Quadro graphics. Each adds 40 watts to the power brick (90, 130, 170).
* The 170W brick is keyed to not fit older laptops. Older bricks are run at 20W mode which is only enough to charge if it's powered off.
* Runs a little warm unless you set it to really conservative power settings.
* Most cables on the left side which would be a problem for left-handed users.
* Sometimes the auto-update tools still auto-update even when disabled, and get re-installed when updating critical pieces.

BENEFITS:
* The screen supports FullHD, and is much brighter than the 60 series Thinkpads.
* Technology refresh. Quadro, Intel i-series CPUs, DDR2 multiplier - they are all a newer generation than the T60p, giving major performance gains.
* Strong hinges - I've had this for a couple of years, and the hinges are still tight.Read more ›

Fantastic buy

I was on the fence whether I should by this laptop based on some of the reviews. I've been using Thinkpads for a long time and this is the best one so far. I had recently return a T540p that I feel has a bunch of design flaws. This model is perfect and was delivered in NEW condition from OEMGENUINE with everything described. Not sure why others have had issues.

What I love about this machine:

1. Has trackpoint buttons! ( Try a T540p and you will know why this is a BIG deal )
2. Has 4 memory slots. Most other Thinkpads only have 2. I currently have 24GB of RAM. Super easy to upgrade.
3. Both Intel and Nvidia graphic cards.
4. Works perfectly with Linux ( Fedora )
5. Keyboard feels great.
6. Screen resolution is awesome. 1080HD
