A great laptop if you can get it cheap.

I purchased this at Best Buy for about $850 (open box deal), so truth be told I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone who paid about $350 less than the current list price on Amazon (about $1150 at the time of this review). I bought this to replace an aging Toshiba Satellite with an i5 and an NVIDIA GTX540m. It was definitely showing it's age. Time for upgrade to this thing.

Pros
1. The specs are really good. A quad core i7 (with hyperthreading) is literally as good as it gets in the Intel space and this one seems to perform everything I throw at it amicably. Games run well, apps run well, I've run Chrome Browser while rendering a video with a Slack chat open and music playing and this thing didn't skip a beat. The GTX960m video card is, for a laptop graphics card, phenomenal. A very pronounced step up from the 540m and even from the 660m I had in an ASUS ROG laptop sometime ago. 8GB of RAM (which I plan on upgrading to 16GB) is a nice touch too.
2. The touch screen is nice. Everyone knows you want the IPS panels and this one has one. 1080p, Glass with a touch screen element. Really everything a laptop panel should have.
3. The keyboard works really well. The keys are quiet and have decent travel. It's a bit difficult coming from a full desktop-sized keyboard but you get used to it fairly quickly. You don't need to press hard to get keys to work which is a nice change from slamming down on a regular, desktop keyboard.
4. The design looks phenomenal. The metal finish on the top and bottom makes it look mean and the soft-touch matte plastic on the inside + the red illuminated keyboard adds to that effect. This thing looks like a monster and I love it.
5. The speakers are loud. Probably the loudest I've ever seen out of stock laptop speakers.Read more ›

Do Not Buy! Broken Hinge Problems on Y50 Touch

Within two weeks of owning this laptop, it literally began falling apart. When opening the laptop, the left hinge began popping out of place causing the plastic around the monitor to also come loose to the point that glass screen is now separated from the monitor and now the laptop can't even be opened without fear of breaking the screen. The laptop was never dropped or handled inappropriately in any way. Once the hinge began creaking and popping every time I opened it the problem became worse. After searching Lenovo repair message forums, it became clear the broken hinge problem is a manufacturer's defect that is known to affect the Y50 touch model. I called both the Lenovo support line and a local computer repair center to see what my options for repair were and both were familiar with the problem I had with this computer. To repair, the entire monitor needs to be replaced either by returning to Lenovo or an authorized repair center, with no guarantee it won't happen again. Worse, Lenovo would not guarantee that the problem was under warranty or that I wouldn't be charged for the repair. Beyond disappointed, spent $1200 for this laptop that is not as well made as a $200 chromebook. Beware of buying. I've returned this item to Amazon for a refund and will never buy Lenovo again.
