This is being marketed as a gaming laptop, but 4k + 16gb + 256gb SSD makes for a pretty nice place to write software.

Battery life is about 4.5 hours with the balanced power plan. I haven't tried the power-saver plan yet.

The key caps aren't dished, but there's enough "white space" between them to maintain a good enough feel. The backlighting is a great feature, there is no fn-key chording required for things like home/end/pgup/pgdn, which drives me nuts on the laptop I was given at wok. And there's a dedicated number pad, which is kind of nice.

The biggest drawbacks are the lack of a middle mouse button (I didn't realize how often I use that until I got this laptop) and an overall size that is a little bit bigger than should really be necessary. There is a pretty wide bezel around the screen and on either side of they keyboard, so this laptop is too wide to fit in the bag I used for my previous laptop even though the screen size is the same. So check the overall dimensions if that is important to you (I have no regrets).

I received this computer on 1/27/2015 from www.bhphotovideo.com. This computer should be a five-star product given its specs and price. The reason it is not is that Lenovo almost destroys the computer's performance with the unbelievable amount of bloatware it pre-installs. The computer, though it appears to be reasonably fast when you first receive and play around with it, is capable of operating much more quickly and efficiently. My advice to anyone who has installed Windows on a computer before, or anyone with a teenage son, is to do a clean install of Windows 7 (or 8) because attempting to eliminate the bloatware piecemeal simply will not appreciably increase the performance of the laptop. Not only will you get back 5-10 gigs more hard disk space by doing the clean install, but you will also eliminate all the program debris that remains after ostensible uninstalls of bloatware, e.g., in the registry and your hard disk. I booted to a Windows 7 disc via the included external CD drive, formatted the hard-drive to one 238 GB partition, and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. The computer now operates light-years faster than the overloaded, shambling hunk of bloatware that was shipped to me in an otherwise beautiful and high-powered computer. For those of you interested in doing the clean install, you need to read this article if you don't know anything about Windows 8's novel BIOS, UEFI: https://askleo.com/how_do_i_boot_from_cddvdusb_in_windows_8/. Also, when you are in the BIOS, you will need to change the CD driver from the default option to the non-default option (I forget what each is called) in order for the computer to read the external DVD drive and Windows 7 or 8 installation CD.Read more ›

The Y50 makes a good engineering / coding laptop due to the high resolution screen and powerful CPU/SSD/CUDA GPU and 16GB of RAM. The keyboard is excellent, and the touchscreen makes for a nice alternative to the (rather poor) trackpad in a pinch, if you don't have a mouse handy. Although it's advertised as a gaming laptop, some caveats make it less than optimal for this purpose. For one, the screen will only update at a maximum rate of 48 Hz, which means that your maximum framerate is limited to 48 FPS. This is true whether you are running at 4K resolution or 1080p. Also, the scaling tends to have problems for games, I have found that games will run in a tiny window in the middle of the screen (e.g. scaling will be disabled) unless you first set your desktop to 1080p before starting the game. While the video card is powerful, 4K gaming is basically out of the question except for 3 or 4 year old games. The screen also has some color issues, namely the yellow tends to come out as a brown/mustard color. This can be remedied to an extent by using color calibration (I'm using it with a Spyder3), but the overall gamut range is not very good. The feel of the laptop is good and it is relatively thin for the size, but the quality of the screen hinges are a bit suspect (people have reported hinges breaking after light usage), and the screen does not open and close very smoothly.

With that being said, the specs are excellent for the price. As of writing, any other laptop with an i7, SSD, and gaming quality card is at least $1200, and typically will not have an IPS touchscreen. If you have to multitask several engineering applications and work with a lot of text (or non-color sensitive applications) then this is a great machine. It is easily as functional as a "mobile workstation", but at a fraction of the cost. For gaming or color-sensitive applications such as graphic design, read the above caveats carefully and see if they are acceptable to you.

Let me first start of by explaining my demographic (I think this key to any product review).
Prime reason for my laptop purchase is for App development (Android/Windows) and also I am a fairly active Lightroom/Photoshop user (to aid my photography hobby) along with playing the occasional strategy game (Total War series buff).
So one of my key requirements was lots of RAM for my programming and great display for my photo editing and processing. This is a great laptop for those looking to get something close to the build quality of a Macbook Pro but with a little more power behind it. This serves the exact purpose with i7 processor, 16 gigs of RAM, 2GB Nvidia graphics and a gorgeous 4K touch display (I did not find any of the issues with mustard yellows, maybe I'm lucky!) The build quality of the laptop is superb (IMHO) although the black brushed metal design is fingerprint magnet.
My laptop before this was a Y40 (2014 model) (which I was able to sell off) and let me tell you if you are coming from the Y40 to this model it will feel like heaven. The laptop just feels levels above in build and display quality over the Y40.
Overall, I am very happy with the purchase and this is just the laptop that I needed.
