The Microsoft Cooling Base for Notebooks -

Pros+
1. Thin and portable: I like how thin and light weight it is, its great if you are on the go compared to other notebook coolers i've seen its a lot thinner/lighter.

2. Air flow: A lot of airflow with little noise and only 1 fan! the single fan is in the middle and so far keep my laptop pretty cool.

3. comfortable: My Dell XPS gets pretty hot sometmes and is uncomfortable when its my lap. The cooling base has pretty much solved that. the contours makes using a laptop on your lap more comfortable

Cons-
1. The usb Connector doesnt have a output, so when you have this plugged in you lose a usb port, which are hard to come by on most smaller laptops.

2. This may not not really a con, but the stand on the base feels cheap and like it might snap off pretty easy, however it is pretty sturdy and doesnt wobble.

Overall I like the microsoft cooling base, it combines comfort, portability, and function to make using your laptop easier. I like it a lot better than Antec's NoteBook Cooler Cooling system for Notebook /laptop computers - NOTEBOOKCOOLER why? The microsoft cooling pad its more comfortable to have on your lap. the microsoft pad has a a stand which gives you a incline (great ofr typing). Portability Compared to the antec i think the microsoft pad is slimmer and lighter.

Other thoughts:
It is comfortable, when on a flat surface and the stand is up it provides a good incline which is better for typing.

Prior to purchasing the Microsoft cooling base, I had a Belkin cooling pad. The Belkin cooling pad was a complete piece of junk; the fan blades sheared off within a week. This was not through misuse, merely because the product was cheap. I've been running the Microsoft unit for two months now and have had to no problems. I am careful with my equipment, but my laptop is turned on (and being used) probably 10-12 hours per day, and is constantly being moved by me, my wife, and my two kids (ages 7 and 9) between the table, the sofa, the floor, etc. My point is that this unit gets moved around a lot, and has withstood the use flawlessly.

The Microsoft base is comfortable to use on my lap, and works well on tabletop as well. Cooling performance is outstanding; similar to the Belkin unit it has a curved top which drastically improves airflow vs. competing flat top units. Although flat top units may have a marginal cooling edge in tabletop use (as they force maximum airflow through the laptop itself), they fall way short when you are using the unit on your lap, since the fan effectively creates a vacuum and moves no air through the laptop. The curved top units (i.e. Microsoft and Belkin) are, in my view, the best choice if you use your laptop as both a tabletop unit, and on your lap as well.

My only complaint about the Microsoft unit is that the UBS cord has a somewhat sloppy "cord management" system which is little more than a single clip that allows you to create a single loop out of the cord. The Belkin unit had a much nicer hidden compartment that permitted you to store the excess cord length that wasn't needed. That said, the Belkin's cord storage was small solace given that the damn unit broke immediately.

All in all, I highly recommend the Microsoft unit. Well built, gets the job done.

I just bought the Black Matte Microsoft Notebook Cooling Base at Target. It use to be $29.99 when it first came out, now it only cost $18. Since the product is completely made of plastic, it is very light in weight. The fan is quiet and the airflow is great. I can feel the air coming out from opposite sides. And since the cooling base is designed to curve in the center, it leaves room for airflow. There is a standing base which flips out on the bottom. Though it does feel like it will snap, it think it will be okay as long as I don't use it too roughly. The product feels decent when I put it on my lap, but not as comfortable as other products that have a cushion/padded bottom. Overall, for 18 dollars, I am satified with this product. It does it's job of cooling my laptop.

I really like this product. I have a 15.4" Compaq laptop and the cooler pad is not that big so it took me 3 or 4 tries to find the best spot to use it but now that I have, it's wonderful. My laptop barely even gets warm now which I consider is well worth the $30 the cooler pad costs. The one thing I don't like is if you push your laptop back instead of picking it up, the riser collapses and it does not work at all used flat. If not for that it would be 5 star all the way.

A very short review of the Microsoft Laptop Cooler.

Being as my laptop, a couple year old HP laptop that we use primarily for our magic jack phone system is sitting here running 24/7 I wanted to offer it the best possible solution to keep it running as cool as possible.

My initial design to do so was to utilize the existing 2 fans on the bottom of the laptop the way they should be used and I simply stuck 4 pill bottle caps under the feet of the laptop to raise it up off the surface of the desk, figuring that the heat that radiates off the bottom of the laptop would radiate down to the desk and thus it would simply be sucking in hot air and not really getting all that much cooling. This proved to do absolutely nothing towards extra cooling for the laptop, it didn't matter if the unit was sitting on it's 1/4" foot pegs or sitting on 3/4" pill bottle caps, the CPU still ran at aproximately 36°c (96°f) which is an acceptable temperature level anyway.

So I was down at the local Target store picking up some new chemo meds for my dog Weston when I saw the Microsoft Laptop Cooler. Keep in mind that I've been eye balling laptop coolers for a year or more now but have never wanted to spend the $29.99 to $39.99 for the laptop coolers that I've seen but now this Microsoft cooler is only $19.99 so I figured that I'd pick it up and give it a go.

This particular cooler comes with a little fold out legs on the back that allow your laptop to sit up at a slight angle so that it's easier to type on and the leg system seems strong on this unit, it doesn't allow it to wobble or any other movement. Personally, I don't find it any easier to type on the laptop when it's at this angle and actually find it more comfortable to type on it when it's laying flat.
