Not ideal, but priced right for what you get

My wife's new HP Pavilion laptop has bronze colored keys with hard-to-see white lettering, so I ordered this LED lamp to improve the situation. It did, but not as well as I had hoped. The single LED is bright, but the beam is too focused to shed light on the entire keyboard no matter how we position it. Still, it works well enough for the price and I haven't found a better alternative yet, so I'm giving it 4 stars.

Perfect for my Asus 1000he

I have an Asus 1000he and this inexpensive USB LED lamp gives off just enough light to light up the keyboard when my screen-brightness is set to 2nd lowest. The beam is narrow and may be too small for a larger keyboard or a keyboard with hard-to-see lettering. It is however, perfect for my white-on-black chiclet keys on my 10.1" netbook.

If you like to set your screen brighter or have a larger keyboard, you might need a stronger (and wider) light that can illuminate your keyboard.

Nice "White" LED Light

I have been wanting to get a compact USB powered LED light for some time but the products I have seen were all a little to blue for my liking for blue is a color that as one gets older becomes more difficult for your eyes to focus. Hence, I was in search of a nice "white" LED light (see photo) and have found it.

If you are a road warrior sitting on the redeye flight and not wanting to be anti social by turning on your overhead light, then this small LED light is the solution. If you like to work at night and do not want to use that hot overhead or desk light in the summer to light your keyboard or note pad, then this temperature cool solution is a MUST HAVE.

The metal goose neck is nice and stays in place when flexed into position (see photo). I really dislike metal goose necks that sage after positioning and this neck behaves well by saying put after placement. If you have a loose fitting or worn USB port, you may want to lean the light forward some to counter balance the weight of the neck.

When coiled flat, the LED light is easy to pack and takes up very little space in the brief case.

As a side note, this light does not project over a large area for to do so would cause the light intensity to drop rapidly and require a more power hungry LED. I estimate the usable projected light cone to be a solid angle of ~25-30 degrees (see photo).

Additional Comments: I purchased this LED light for $5.00 (Summer 2009) shipping included. At the current asking price of $1.50 plus $2.99 shipping (Jun 2010), I feel this item has an even better "price to value" ratio.

Inexpensive and effective

I have the same problem as another reviewer with my HP laptop and its metallic keyboard. It makes it difficult to see those keys in anything less than direct light.
Enter this LED lamp.
The light is small but does the trick. The arm/cord is flexible allowing for any angle you want, and is stiff enough that it stays in place. When you're not using it, coil it up and it takes up very little space.
The best feature is the price!

What did you honestly expect for $4.50?

It gets the job done but I wouldn't recommend this light. The LED has too sharp a beam and does not fully illuminate the keyboard area. More like a little spotlight. Would be a better product if there were a way to adjust the beam so it would diffuse somewhat. A power switch or button would be helpful too. But it does light up the keyboard as it is advertised to do. I do like the style, I think the sleek neck actually looks really nice. So I'll use this for now, will probably replace it with something that has a wider beam when I get around to it. Not that important a thing. Bottom line, it's ok, but keep looking.

This inexpensive accessory is essential for anyone who travels with a notebook computer. Plug it in, adjust the gooseneck (which is a good length) and light up your keyboard.

There are a number of lights like this and they all probably do the same thing. This one was nicely packaged, looks fine and works.

Because it is no worth rating. I wish there could be zero point. On second time, it didn't work twice and I am using this dim LED lamp among the rest 18 that I bought to test how soon it will lose its function. Please don't waste your money.
