Great Laptop - Fast, Good Graphics, and Good Loud Sound

I will start this review by saying this is my second laptop to buy in the last 2 months. My first purchase was an HP Envy that I ordered directly through HP because of discounts through my company. I received the computer and was blown away at the speed of the solid state hard drive paired with 16 gigs of ram. 9 days later, I opened the computer all the way to the stopping point (very gently) and the screen went black and never came back on. I was livid. I returned the computer vowing never to use HP again because of the product failure and horrible customer service I encountered with them.

With that being said, I did much research and came across this new model of Asus multimedia laptops. I called Asus to confirm that it was in fact the computer that I was reading about and found out that it came out in March of this year. I ordered the computer and received it 4 days later with Prime shipping. No tax, and free shipping made it a bit easier to pay that much for a computer. I will give you my opinion about this new laptop

Pros:
-Very well built machine. The frame seems very strong and looks sleek. A solid hinge on the screen seems like a better idea than the 2 smaller hinges on the HP.
-You can turn the track pad on and off which helps if you use a mouse and don't want to accidentally hit the track pad while typing. I had that problem alot with the HP.
-Screen resolution is beautiful
-Very fast. It starts up in about 14 seconds or so. That's with the facial recognition camera starting and logging you in.
-The sound with the little subwoofer plugged in is really good and really loud for a laptop, if you unplug the speaker, it sucks.Read more ›

Alright guys some of these 'reviews' are bit lacking here. One sentence for an item that's a grand? Don't quit your day job. Might as well throw my two cents about my thoughts with this laptop.

I have been in the market for a laptop for months. Why? Well laptops tend to be cyclical, new models come out during X season and if you're about to drop some serious moolah on one- you don't want to be that guy paying top dollar for old tech when the next 'latest and greatest' is coming out in no time.

Here was my profile in looking for a laptop, I wanted one for school work, for downtime ie playing some games, had to be durable, and it could not look like a flashy neon look at me look at me laptop. I'm looking at you MSI...

This laptop exceeds all of criteria and then some.

For starters you are dealing with an i7 4720, for the layman out there that's the Arnold Schwarzenegger when it comes to processors in a laptop. For the tech heads out there you already know but just in case: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i7-4720HQ-Notebook-Processor.132361.0.html

For a real world application I found myself installing a large game, transferring files off of a USB and watching a 4gb video file at the same time. This processor does not flinch in fact much like Arnold it laughs at your puny attempt in stressing it out.

Next lets talk about the GPU: GTX 950M the next iteration of the 850M. A side note for this years model of Geforce cards, they are only marginally more powerful than last years offerings. So in the case of my 950m its about 7-10 percent more powerful than the 850m. Basically the 950m is an overclocked version of the 850m (give or take).

This Thing Rocks!

I've had my N550JX for a few months now, and I absolutely love this thing! It's incredibly fast, especially for a laptop, and I didn't even opt for the SSD. The bottom line is that I can play just about any game I want, including the Total War series Shogun II and Rome II, Borderlands, and Alien Isolation at moderately high video settings, quickly transcode movies, and record multiple tracks of music smoothly. The screen on this is absolutely beautiful, and can be viewed easily from just about any angle. The touch screen works incredibly well too, and makes scrolling feel so much more natural. The sound on it is decent, but without the subwoofer it lacks a little oomph. The exterior of the case is downright beautiful brushed metal, and the unit itself has stood up extremely well to a couple of small drops and collisions so far. Really, it's by far the best of the 5 laptops I have owned so far in my life, and this laptop has finally almost caught up to my souped up desktop computer that I built two years ago, so I couldn't ask for anything more!

Should you buy this computer? The short answer: YES! If you're looking for a well built, powerful, feature-filled computer for less than $1,000, it's really hard to do better than the Asus N550JX-DS71T. It may not have gotten a ton of attention, but if you're looking for a computer that can run whatever you need it to while still maintaining a slim profile, than I highly recommend this laptop.

--PERFORMANCE: This laptop is incredibly powerful, given it's price. The Intel Core i7 processor is great at running several intense programs at a time without skipping a beat, and this combined with it's Nvidia GTX 950M graphics card makes tasks such as video editing and data processing a breeze. I haven't had a single program crash on me in the rough twenty days that I've owned this computer, and I typically run a variety of video editing software. If you want to edit in 4K, you'll need to look elsewhere, but for most filmmakers, this laptop will be more than sufficient.
Now, if you're looking at this computer for gaming purposes, you should be able to manage high frame rates at medium to medium-high/ultra settings (depending on the game). Newer games will struggle, while most older games should run flawlessly on ultra settings. If you're looking to run graphically intense games such as The Witcher 3 or Batman Arkham Asylum on high settings, you're going to want to look at a laptop with a more powerful setup. In terms of value, however, you're getting a lot for the money with this Asus laptop. For gamers who are on a budget, very few sub-$1000 laptops can offer better performance. I was able to run Assassins Creed 3, Hitman: Absolution, and Among the Sleep at very high settings, 1080P at around 50 FPS. Warframe ran well on high settings at 1080P as well.Read more ›
