This is a fantastic computer for the price. I know very few people that like Windows 8, so I tip my hat to Dell for offering a new computer that comes with Windows 7.

In terms of features:
> I LOVE the keyboard. The keys are very lightweight and easy to depress. It feels solid and has absolutely zero give to it when you're typing. The keyboard alone for me almost makes the laptop worth it.
> The trackpad is fairly average. If you need multitouch gestures for more than two fingers, look elsewhere. It's also a little small. However, it's fully functional and does a good job for what it does. I think the only people that will find it inadequate are people coming from using a modern MacBook (Air or Pro; both have excellent trackpads).
> The speakers are a little less powerful than I would like, but they do provide excellent quality of sound. You're not going to fill a large hall with their sound, but for listening to music while you're working or watching a movie, they're great.
> I appreciate the fact that it includes a CD/DVD read/write drive. I realize that computers are moving away from them, but there are enough occasions when I want to listen to a CD or watch a DVD that it's nice not to have to worry about carrying an external one around.
> The screen has excellent colors and above-average viewing angles. It's a little low resolution, especially if you're used to super high-resolution displays like on most smartphones and TV's, but it definitely gets the job done. Unless you're critically inspecting it, you probably won't even notice the difference.
> The specs are good. 8GB RAM and a 4th-gen i5 means that the computer has the power it needs for pretty much everything and more than enough RAM.

Enjoying it so far. Have had it for about two weeks. This is my first new computer in about six years, so anything would have better than the old piece of junk I was used to working on. So far, the computer seems really quick (even with all of my old files transferred over from my last Dell), resolution is good, and I really like the keyboard and the fact that the keys aren't packed like sardines. Another great feature of the keyboard is that it has a numeric keypad, unlike my last laptop. This makes typing in numeric data for spreadsheets so much easier when I don't have my Bluetooth keyboard attached.

If you plan to use dual monitors, make sure that your current monitor has an HDMI port. I assumed my current monitor did (since it was only 7 months old), but it didn't. So, I purchased (apparently the wrong) VGA to HDMI converter for $35 on Amazon. It didn't work so I returned it and just bought a new ASUS HDMI monitor for about $109 out the door (ASUS VS228H-P 22-Inch Full-HD 5ms LED-Lit LCD Monitor).

I was most excited about getting a computer with Windows 7 and not Windows 8 though! My only gripe is that it didn't come with any installation/back-up CDs. It prompted me to create my own copy a few days after I had been using it. It gives you the option to use CDs or a USB stick. Since I didn't have any CDs on hand, I formatted the only USB stick I could find laying around. Unfortunately it was 10 GB of space needed to create the back up files, and I only had an 8 GB USB. Then I tried to use my new WS My Passport Ultra Portable External Drive, but it told me it was going to format the entire drive and erase all my data to proceed... NO-GO! CANCEL! CANCEL! ABORT! (that was close).

Dell makes great computers. I needed a laptop for a consulting job and bought this same computer a year and a half ago. It came with Windows 8. I thought that was good to have the latest software. WRONG Several IT professionals said basically the same thing. Windows has lots of issues. That is a long story and I am not going to tell it here. I will tell you that after a year and a half my frustration was so great that I bought this computer with Windows 7. Oh what a relief to have all my software functioning again. I am so glad that Dell is still shipping Windows 7 machines. Until a future generation of Windows comes out that actually works, my advice is stay with Windows 7 and spare yourself the agony of that experience.
My recommendation is Buy This Computer.

Have had this for a week now and it decent. It has good performance, which I was looking for. My other laptop seemed to die and only was a dual core and with Windows had some laggy video performance. This one is pretty smooth video wise. The extra memory is nice, but since this is being used for heavy multi-application use it isn't needed - my other one had 4GB. However, since the memory is shared with video it does give a nicer cushion. I dislike the keyboard. The F & J key ridges to help you find your finger positioning are hardly noticeable. It is easy to loose your finger positioning on the keys. Also all the keys are completely flat so that does not help either with feeling your way around the keyboard. The layout is nice though with the keypad side being like a desktop keyboard. The one keyboard drawback is the arrow keys are narrow - about half the height of the other keys.

The one thing that should be different is the power cord connection to the laptop goes straight in instead of the being a right angled connector. This leaves the power cord vulnerable to bumping because it is on the side (if it were on the back it would be fine) and makes it more difficult to deal with the cord than if the connector were a right angle. No disk, power or network activity indicators so you can' tell anything about the current state of the laptop like is present on most other laptops - when you are used to it like I am you notice the lack of it.

The screen is typical of Dells - not that great. The same typical downside of the size of the pixels are either too large or spaced too far apart so the picture has a "grainy" look to it and you don't see smooth edges on curves, angled lines and certain fonts. All in all it is passable.

Overall I like this thing and hopefully it will hold up quite a while.
