This is a very well designed and well manufactured tablet that has great looks, some very nice tablet apps (including most of the biggies you could want: Hulu, Netflix, Fruit Ninja!). Where it really shines is when you need to stop playing with a toy and get some real work done. That's when the kickstand and the touch cover(or better yet, the type cover), plus the legacy windows desktop save your bacon.

The included version of Office 2013 gets the job done in real office, not some lousy app store wanna-be. That means you get perfect compatibility with work documents, say, on your sharepoint server workflow. You can't run macros/VBA on this version, and there are a few things you can't do in excel on this version, but I am a very VBA/macro-heavy user of Office and a poweruser of excel, and honestly, I don't miss that stuff that much. (If you must have it, get the ultrabook version, the Surface Pro, which will run regular office, in January).

There are a lot of self-pleasuring gadget-geek reviews out there who make much of the dichotomy between the legacy desktop and the tile start screen. They seem to think that you and I are idiots, and that we can't pick the right tool for the right job. (I submit that folks whose "work" involves nothing more than writing about gadgets don't have enough real work to understand what a gadget is really good for, but I digress.)

The legacy desktop is also very handy for networking and other file-handling jobs, along with computer management via the deeper geek tools like the computer management panel and more. You don't ever have to mess with this stuff if you don't want to, but if you need to, it's there.

This is the tablet you have been waiting for!

The interface is great. Easy to find and organize your apps. Live tiles put information right at your fingertips. Neat features allow you to dock an app on the side and use two at once... use twitter while watching a movie, or keep your audio player up while you surf the net.

The Surface is well built. Great glass touch screen, nice kickstand. Solid, well built feel. Nice 1.5 lbs.

The type keyboard works quite well, and the magnetic click connection is easy and cool. Makes a nice slim cover as well. Use it with the kickstand like a laptop, Flip it back to use it as a tablet, and the keys don't get in the way. The type keyboard is a little better, but a little bigger as well.

Battery life is great, and the adapter has the same magnetic, clicky connection as the keyboard. This means a common failure point, the connector will last a lifetime.

HDMI adapter, means you can connect to your TV. Great for streaming Netflix.

The included Office RT is the new version, and is a sweet addition. IE 10 works great.

Also, the memory is expandable using an SDXC card. Woohoo!

I have never had a tablet before - I've always had a fairly small laptop so I didn't see the need, but when one of these came up at at really good price I couldn't refuse. I read all the reviews before buying, and here's what I've found to be true of the many conflicting reports online. At the end I'll put a summary of why I think this tablet is a great device from Microsoft.

'Tablet plus' is a term coined by a few reviewers - I agree with them in that some claims of this being a laptop replacement are a bit far fetched. It is however a great tablet with some stand out add-ons like a real office suite, USB port, and a very functional keyboard cover.

Great screen, 1366x768 with brilliant colour and brightness. OK it's not retina, but too many pixels can be a burden on battery and CPU resources, and HD resolution on a 10 inch screen is more than enough.

Not laggy - I suspect that people who have issues with slowness opening apps may have installed a resource hungry app, or possibly they have DNS badly configured on their network. Because many of the preloaded apps rely on cloud based services, a slow internet connection or badly configured network will have an impact on performance, especially when opening apps.

App store still marginal - a lot of people can't agree on this, because it all depends on what you need. But I say the app store is still lacking in content. Thankfully these days, a lot of what I do is equally as good in the browser (Facebook, You Tube, etc) so it hasn't been a deal breaker for me. But because RT doesn't allow us to install x86 programs on the desktop, the app store does need to have a better selection to get the most use out of the device. Hopefully that will get better over time.

I basically stopped using mine a few months back. Then I installed the preview version of Windows 8.1 - and its a whole different story. The Surface RT running Windows 8.1 is now a 1.5 pound laptop. Its responsive within apps but loading apps is definitely still slow. And you really need to shut it down and restart it like a PC, rather than leave it "on" in sleep mode like an iPad. But with a full version of Outlook 2013 now included, SkyDrive doing full replication and a TypeCover + the MS Office Apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote) - you now have an exceptionally light, thin, cool-running and long-lasting (9hrs) laptop. There really is nothing else like it on the market today at this size/weight.

It makes an incredible travel PC.
