Here is how to select a compatible Blu-ray burner to replace the existing optical drive in your laptop computer. The most common situation is you have a laptop with a DVD drive and you want to install a Blu-ray drive in its place. (All Blu-ray drives can also handle DVDs and CDs, so you aren't losing any functionality by making this replacement.) Selecting a compatible replacement drive turns out to be slightly complicated. Here are some tips I've discovered after replacing optical drives on many different laptops:

1. Download and read the owner's manual for the laptop to find out how to remove and replace the existing optical drive.

2. I believe that all reasonably-modern laptops can accept and use an internal Blu-ray optical drive, even though they may have originally shipped with an internal DVD drive. Windows will automatically load an appropriate driver for it (or you can find one), and although I'm not a Mac guy, I assume something similarly easy and automatic happens on Macs.

3. Decide whether you want just a Blu-ray PLAYER drive, or a Blu-ray BURNER drive (which, of course, can also play), so you order a drive that meets your needs.

4. Decide whether you want a BDXL Blu-ray drive. These have all the features of normal Blu-ray drives, but can also handle 3D, triple-layer, and quad-layer Blu-ray media. You will probably find that the price of a BDXL drive is fairly reasonable. Might be worth getting a BDXL drive to "future-proof" your laptop and allow you to playback and burn all types of Blu-ray media, not just the original single-layer and dual-layer Blu-ray media.

5.

For those of you who know enough that you would be purchasing this drive, this may or may not bother/apply to you.

If you are wondering if this will fit your laptop optical bay, yes (unless you have an unusually laid out machine) it will fit, but you more than likely will need to change out the bezel as most laptops which still have optical drives have "vanity" bezels.

I bought this through PC-Mart fulfilled by Amazon. Seemingly "new" OEM as it came in a sticker sealed brown box, I was none the wiser to the real nature of this drive. Truth, I got a used drive. It was region locked to region 2, the UK, and it had already gone through (the usual 5) region changes. Now if I lived in the UK and had UK media, this wouldn't be a problem but as I do not, well... yeah.

Unfortunately, I only discovered this after the return period as I had only used the drive to burn data and access software discs of which it works as expected. And because it came "sealed" and I've had a very good experience over the years with my Amazon purchases, I did not think to run a hardware or firmware scan. For it to have gone through the region changes all 5 newly OEM times gives me the logical reason to deduce that this is a used drive. (and yes there are ways to work around/deal with the region locked issue- "voiding" an already un-useful warranty but i digress...)

So as a data device and burner, this drive works fine. Haven't had any reportable issues. But as an as advertised purchase, this drive is a bad deal as I paid new price for a used drive that came region locked to a foreign region.

Burner installed easily into my Asus ROG laptop. Reads and plays without issue. However, I've thus far not been able to write to BD-R discs (Nero 11). I've been searching for a firmware update, but can only find one listed via Sony. (Will not allow update even though it's the same drive) Panasonics site: Nothing available. It doesn't seem to recognize the model. Matshita doesn't have anything showing either. So after upgrading my drive, I still have the same functions available as I did before- play BLU/ write DVD.
Will continue looking for a resolution to the issue and post it if I find one.

Great drive! Got this to upgrade my DVD burner in my lenovo y550p. Installed without any problems. Took the original faceplate off my old drive and installed it on this one so I could keep the stock look on my computer. Drive is super quiet and fast. One thing you will need to do is change the drive region. On PC this is done in the drive properties window. Be careful you only have 5 region changes before it locks. Great buy!

This is my initial review after a week of use. I installed this drive on a Fujitsu NH570. Installation was simple and took only a few minutes. Please note that no playback software is included with the drive so that must be purchased separately. That being the case, after installing the drive, I purchased and installed Cyberlink PowerDVD 14 in order to play Blu-Rays. Media playback on BDs, DVDs, and CDs were smooth. The only feature I've not yet tried is burning a blank BD. I will update this review once I've done that.
Some of the other reviewers of this product mentioned receiving drives that had already been used. Although the drive I received arrived in a nondescript brown box, I checked the properties and confirmed I was the first one selecting a region code. The drive showed no signs of prior use.
Overall, I highly recommend this drive to anyone wanting to upgrade their laptop DVD drive to a BD capable drive. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching BD movies without dealing with external drives and cables.
