Right out of the box with all applications closed, this gets a PassMark Benchmark rating of 1650. It runs very sluggish and struggles with multitasking. The Beats Audio doesn't sound nearly as good as my $30 pair of CA 2.1 speakers. In fact I don't think the sound quality is good for anything but voice communication. Shell feels and looks cheap and lacks appeal. Keyboard is very difficult to see in low light.

According to HP this laptop can be upgraded to 16GB of RAM. To upgrade the ram you must remove several screws, snap off the keyboard panel, disconnect the keyboard panel, disconnect several ribbons to the logic board, remove the logic board and the memory is underneath. Two different size of capacity from two different manufacturers. To access the HD, you must do the above steps minus the removal of the logic board. I did this to install a SSD and performance greatly improved with a fresh OEM copy of Win 8.1. Passmark score is now 2199. Since 3GB of RAM is dedicated to Video, I'd highly recommend upgrading the RAM too. I removed the 2GB module and replaced with a 8GB module for a total of 12GB.

A fresh copy of Windows 8.1 found all the drivers minus two, one for a WiFi button I don't even appear to have and one for the Coolsense functionality which I don't care about now that I use a SSD. If you categorize laptops into budget, mid-range, or high-end, I would put this laptop in the mid-range.

I agree with one of the other reviewers that this computer is disappointingly slow. I have a similar HP laptop with i3 core processor that seems to perform at least as well. I am not a gamer or power user. I am just judging by how quirky the whole thing feels using email, Microsoft Office, and the internet. I also fault Amazon for not using a representative photo. The photo looks much like my older Pavilion that has a VGA port and I stupidly relied on appearance to suppose a VGA port was available. It is not and it's not easy to figure this out from the description on Amazon or anywhere on HP's website. Compatibility issues with a second monitor were easily remedied with an HDMI to VGA adapter, though. For the price, this is a good value, but not a great one. One other issue is the mouse pad. It regularly interprets small movements as wanting to enlarge or reduce the screen size. Very annoying. Maybe there is a way to do so with software that I have not discovered, but there ought to be a microswitch to turn off the mouse pad so that inadvertent touches of the pad while typing don't suddenly alter your work. Since I use this mostly as a desktop, wireless keyboard and mouse have been excellent solutions. Windows 8.1 - well, that's not the computer's fault.

Pros:
1) A big screen; 2) Run fast for routine office and developers using Eclipse, Lingo etc.; 3)Maybe the memory can be upgraded to 8G, I will try, but I am not sure; 4) The battery works well more than 5 hours.
Cons:
1) The ability to receive WIFI signal is too weak, sometimes, my mobile phone and ThinkPad laptop can work very well to receive the WIFI, some far from the wireless router, at home or office, unfortunately, this HP Pavilion cannot do so, it reports no WIFI.
2)The frame is not very solid, there is little gap between the plastic frame and the screen.
3) I cannot figure out the specialty of Beatsaudio.

I hate windows 8. Just moving the mouse makes the screen change places sometimes. And sometimes takes me places that are hard to get out of. I hate it. Also, the mouse pad thing doesnt have seperate buttons for "right click" and "left click"ing. So when you do that it makes it go wierd places or doesnt read that you want to actually click something. UGH

Unfortunately the wireless on this laptop has been pathetic and their are not currently updated drivers for this. On the support site I am obviously not the only one with this issue. I also find the touch pad response poor. I wish I had returned this model.

When you close the lid (as is normal with a laptop), the wifi is disabled. Not just that power is removed (normal), but disabled. When you open the lid, it states the wifi is disabled via hardware switch. Tried pressing the airplane button, but nothing. If I press the airplane button BEFORE closing the lid, it functions as expected. Only way to get wifi working again -- reboot. Planning on returning this. Total design flaw IMHO.

Purchased new late May 2015. Screen violently shakes, IE closes out at random, not able to close down pages and need to do a restart during such times, "corrupt", random white screens and more -- all of this after HP has taken over my Laptop and done remote assistance for more than ten hours on two occasions already. HP assistance suggests sending Laptop to them for repair at this point and they are sending a FREE shipment carton, etc. HP says it does not issue loaner Laptops even though the problems with this new Laptop are not caused by me! I feel this is WRONG and have stated so. At any rate, am now seriously contemplating returning this and purchasing another Laptop with the hopes that it will not be "corrupted" and will work better. Am wondering if I simply got a fouled and messed up Laptop and if I should simply return it for a similar exchange. Without the problems, I DO like this Laptop -- although I wish it had a lighted keyboard and Bluetooth. My EMail is: BlackParentSpeaks@juno.com
